I was really waffling between Cass Cain, Steph Brown and Bart Allen on this one...

Soooooo

First, Steph Brown, who took on the Robin title and the Batgirl title.

And Cassandra Cain, who got Babs' OK to take on the Batgirl title.

I wish Cass and Steph could share the Batgirl role. :'(

And the awesomely hilarious Bart Allen who is now a Flash!

So S_D'ers, who's yours?

suggested tags: char: spoiler/robin/batgirl/steph brown, char: batgirl/cass cain, char: impulse/kid flash/bart allen, char: batgirl/oracle/barbara gordon, series: 30 days of scans

This one's kinda tough because I like people, and the ID doesn't really matter to me.

So I'll exclude Barry Allen since he didn't take over for Jay Garrick, really. I'll also exclude the Lanterns because they're all one big happy corps. I'll also exclude Dick, because Bruce is coming back. So...

Stephanie Brown (from Tim Drake and Cassandra Cain)

2. Ted Kord (from Dan Garrett), 3. Terry McGinnis (from Bruce Wayne), 4. Cassandra Cain (from Barbara Gordon), 5. Dan Dreiberg (from Hollis Mason), 6. Tim Drake (from Jason Todd), 7. Jason Todd (from Dick Grayson), 8. Wally West (from Barry Allen), 9. Holly Robinson (from Selina Kyle), 10. Jaime Reyes (from Ted Kord)

Stargirl, (from Sylvester Pemberton and Jack Knight)

This is really one where DC has far more than Marvel. Until lately, Marvel hasn't really done the legacy hero thing.

Well, they've tried before, but the legacy characters tended to take on totally different names (Crusader after Freedom Ring for example) or get ignored for a long time until someone wanted to kill them off for cheap pathos (Rita DeMara as the second Yellowjacket, I'd say it looks like they're going away from that route, but then they went and killed/warped a whole host of legacy characters in Spider-Man after not using them in forever). The only one I can think of offhand who made any serious headway as a visible character was the Dane Whitman incarnation of the Black Knight, who took the costume to become a hero after his uncle died regretting that he'd spent his life being a villain in it. And even he's spent some pretty long periods off-panel.

This is a tough one for a dc fan but i gotta go with jaime here. Unlike the batkids who i love, jaime's out there on his own without the benefit of mentoring by any of his predecessors but the legacy still matters to him.

how many Marvel legacies are there?

Ben Reilly/Spider-Man and a few women who have taken the title Spider-Woman or Spider-Girl, but at least a couple of those women didn't take the title out of any relationship to each other or to Spider-Man... various successors to Steve Rogers' titles... I'm at a loss for others, I admit.

expanded to a broader definition, there are a lot of mentor/mentee relationships where someone takes a complimentary name and/or look to their mentor (various holders of Mjolnir, like Beta Ray Bill) and a lot of new generations of teams (X-Men, Avengers, New Mutants, Young Avengers)... but legacy characters of people who take both the exact name and at least the general look of someone who has retired or fallen in the Marvelverse?

I'll add the Arrow family, particularly Mia Dearden.

Hilariously, I think Hank Pym might have the most out of the Marvelverse strictly going by the original definition. Most of them even used prior codenames of his too.
- Ant-Man (Scott Lang)
- Ant-Man (Eric O'Grady), villain...still? He still in the Thunderbolts?
- Stature (Cassie Lang, who gets to be a legacy of a legacy, since she's Scott's kid)
- Goliath (Clint Barton during one of his non-Hawkeye phases)
- Goliath (Erik Josten), villain turned semi-hero
- Goliath (Bill Foster)
- Goliath (Tom Foster, also a legacy of a legacy, since he's Bill's nephew)
- Yellowjacket (Rita DeMara), villain turned hero

Stephanie Brown is my favorite, right now. I'm loving her as Batgirl. Of course, Barbara (who I also loved as Batgirl) is actually a Legacy character, too, since she wasn't actually the first Batgirl. We just always think of her as the first.

Same with Ted, my favorite Blue Beetle.

Wally West and Tim Drake are other favorites, having taken ownership of their roles.

Does Dick as Nightwing count?

I know a lot of people here like Stephenie, but is anyone bothered by the fact that Cass, an Asian woman, was replaced by a white girl? Isn't that another example of DC knocking off it's minority superheroes and replacing them with often blue-eyed, blond haired Aryans?

No, it's not just you, a lot of people have been bothered by it; particularly the fact that Cass has been kicked off into limbo. (And then there was Ryan Choi's death, too) I like both characters, but it is very frustrating, I agree.

Oh, so many Legacies, so little time...

1. I think Dick as the Bat would be fine, with the added fun of Bruce coming back - even with the Batman Inc arc, it's gonna be awkward I'd imagine.

2. Cass Cain from Babs - she has such a cool and gripping backstory and evolution into the role.

3. Steph from Cass - fun with BTVS snarkiness and appeal

4. Tim from Jason - pre-Crisis approach but ending in a love story with Kon because the world needs it!

5. Jaime from Ted - last but not least

Cass Cain for me.

I don't know what it is, she really shouldn't work, but she drew me in, and, as silly as it is, I loved the body-language/fighting-as-her-only-language conceit, and even once that was gone, that she actually had trouble with some of the simplest things, like reading, while she was an all-around ass-kicker in fighting. Of course, thanks to He Who Will Not Be Named, most of what was cool about her is gone, but I remain hopeful that somebody will just decide to do with his run what he did with the rest of Cain's history - completely ignore it.

And even going beyond the character herself... I love the costume. It's my absolute favorite batcostume. Even when Huntress was wearing it. I don't know, it's just so spooky and cool. She actually looks like she could inspire some kind of fear in Gotham criminals, whereas the other Batgirls (and Nightwing and Robin, and even Batman himself except at his most stylized) should really inspire laughter (until they've gotten their asses kicked a few times).

Don't get me wrong, I love Steph too... but I love her as Spoiler. Maybe even as Robin. As Batgirl... well, she's better than a healed Babs taking on the role, or some completely new person, but not by much. I want Spoiler as Spoiler (or again, Robin would be nice). Failing that, I'd love it if they do what was suggested and have two Batgirls at once. All signs point to them doing it for Batman.

I don't have a scan on it any am too hot to go looking (that is, the temperature is too high, but I'd like to believe I'm also too attractive to have to do it), but I absolutely love Shiva's 'eulogy' for Cass before carrying her to the Lazarus pit, after she died saving somebody else and refusing to kill. "Heroes are forever. The rest of us are just part of the story." It's one of my favorite all-time comic moments.

Motto on reasons to love Cass. And motto on the most practical bat costume ever. Of all the Batkids, there might be better detectives, planners, strategists, technicians, drivers, interrogators, information analysts, riddle solvers, acrobats, escape artists, public relations specialists... but Cass owns hand-to-hand and stealth forever.

And I loved reading I want Spoiler as Spoiler... aaand let's stop the quote right there. :) Seems like most other Steph fans are totally cool with the purple --um, I mean eggplant-- stripes on the bat costume... :(

Hmm, most of the sort of things I read (European stuff, webcomics, some manga) don't really lend themselves to legacies. As interesting as it would be to see a child of Valérian and Laureline having adventures or some such.

Although if Aux Sources Du Z remains canon, then Spirou is his own legacy character!

Wally West and Tim Drake. Easily the best two characters to hold there legacy's mantle. Two of my all-time favorite characters.

It's pretty sad that Wally has pretty much no role now. Tim Drake has also been gone through quite a bit. I feel like his current identity is sorta awkward to watch and wasn't thoroughly planned out. IMO, I feel like he should Bruce's successor as Batman(if there has to be).

First and foremost:

Kate Spencer, who took up the Manhunter title:

Not always likable (seems to be a recurring trend in my fave characters), but she doesn't know the meaning of the word quit. Bonus points for a great supporting cast, and for her son Ramsey, who'll go on the take up the Manhunter mantle himself (we can hope).

Runner up: Jaime Reyes (current Blue Beetle). I'd like to say to say something nice about Ted Grant's kid, but he'd have to develop a personality first.

I guess I'm gonna have to go with Kyle Rayner. It's been pointed out that the Lanterns are a group with members chosen on merit, not a lineage, so this may not count, but remember, for a while there Kyle was the ONLY Green Lantern after Hal pretty much singlehandedly trashed the rest of the Corps. During that period, he pretty much WAS the Green Lantern legacy, so I'd say he counts. Anyway, he was the guy wearing the ring while I was first getting into comics, so he's the guy I think of when I think of Green Lantern. There are plenty of other legacy characters I like, mind you, but Kyle's the guy I think of when I hear the term, so... yeah. I'm goin' with him.
