Date: 2010-09-02 02:14 am (UTC)If the villain is in fact another version of Bruce, then the clone would serve as a physical manifestation of Bruce's misgivings. He's a walking argument that only Bruce Wayne can be Batman, and he's willing to kill Terry just to prove that point.
As such, the fight between Terry and the clone then becomes a vehicle for addressing his secondary conflict of Wayne, not to mention a means of resolving that conflict. When Bruce sees Terry defeat a younger version of himself, he's forced to acknowledge the fact that Terry is the ideal Batman for this new era. By defeating "Bruce," Terry becomes Batman in earnest.
