Homosexuality Comes to Riverdale!

Below the cut are four pages from Veronica #202, which introduces the new gay character, Kevin Keller to Archie fans. If you saw the original preview a few months ago, you saw it was handled pretty tastefully. Veronica has a crush on Kevin. Kevin confides to Jughead he's gay. Jughead doesn't bat an eye but decides not to tell Veronica because he thinks it will be fun to watch her suffer. However as we see under the cut, some of the gang are starting to think that it's more there's more than a Cable/Deadpool bromance going on between Forsythe P. Jones and Kevin.





Oh, poor Big Ethel. She's so confused...



I want to make a joke about a gay man hating fruit due to the double meaning of the word "fruit," but knowing SD, the comments will be loaded with people making a better one than I could.




These two pages speak for themselves and honestly, there's a lot of amusing bits in this issue. Hopefully someone else can put up some of the other pages.

:D This is actually really cute and I must say, I applaud the people at Archie Comics for handling this so well. Sort of a simplistic treatment but at the same time I don't think that every gay character needs to deal with someone going EW YOU'RE GAY. It's nice to see him presented as just a normal person with the very normal problem of having to deal with someone who has feelings for them that aren't returned.

I'm pretty convinced that Jughead is asexual. Or possibly foodsexual. Because, let's face, he's not really any more interested in guys than he is in girls. The only reason he doesn't usually get squicked by guys like he does by girls is that the guys have never tried to hit on him. I mean, yeah, he cares a lot about Archie, but he also cares a lot about Betty. And he has a frenemy relationship going on with Reggie, but he has the same thing going on with Veronica.

So either a late-developing bisexual or asexual. I'm going with the latter for now.

I enjoyed that, and it's been years since I've enjoyed Archie comics (like, oh I dunno, 40 years? eep!) But as everyone else has pointed out, that approach was refreshing and it was nice to see a person who was gay instead of a gay guy they tried to make into a person. Well done! (And I agree, Jughead is foodsexual. His foodgasms are legendary.)
