DC Celebrates 75 years, but not everyone got invited to the party

Here's is the official 75th Anniversary logo that DC is using for hats, buttons, tee-shirts and items at Zazzle its marketing partner.

Notice anyone missing? That's right, instead of Wonder Woman they have included the Flash and Green Lantern.
Needless to say there's some concern about this exclusion. A petition has been started to request DC provide an all-female anniversary logo as well. The logo would include four of the top DC female heroes - Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Power Girl, Oracle, Batwoman, Black Canary Zatanna — take your pick.

So go take a look and sign it if you feel DC should do right by its female characters.

This really weirded me out. I know they're really trying to push GL (and the Flash) as major franchises but that's no reason to leave out the really recognizable W. :/

Yeah leaving out WW seems like an unusual move since she is supposed to be in the big 3.

Sad, but not surprising. The dissing of WW is practically a cottage industry with DC.

Hardly, they did make her one of the big three in "Trinity" within the past couple of years, for example. She doesn't get as much exposure, and she should be on this logo, but I wouldn;'t say dissing her is THAT common.

::looks at DC's title list since Johns became the company darling a few years ago:: Gee, I wonder why. It couldn't possibly be because there was a major push by all involved to bring the characters back to the forefront of the DCU, while Wondy had to put up with the likes of Amazon Attacks.

Wow..im not really a fan of Wondy at all (i do plan on trade waiting JMS's run tho) but fuck...that hurts.

Even if she hasn't been a huge part of DC mythos/a huge sales contributor of late, she's still the most famous female Super Hero ever. An icon even. That has to count for something, right?

And the pin itself represents everything I hate about DC. White, straight, male, character (two of them from the Silver Age aka the age of White, Male, Straight characters) who at one point in time, were virtually indistinguishable from each other.

I love DC, i really do. But it's never been a mystery as to why Marvel has and will always kick their ass in sales and popularity.

To be fair, there's nothing in particular about the logo saying that Green Lantern, in any case, is white. The... eh... *snaps fingers absently*... aw, hell, I forget his name, but one of the Green Lanterns is a black guy, and has been featured quite prominently in recent years - in 'JLU', for instance. Given that these are just silhouettes, it might very well be him - in fact, that might be why he's here; they might have wanted a little diversity in their logo.

At Kmarts and Walmarts nationwide, I've seen firsthand that there's a huge push for DCU merch with the Justice League... minus WW. The same four are always there (Hal sometimes front and center, as it's prepping for the film), but Wondy is completely absent.

Oh, she's on the girl merch, as is Batgirl and Supergirl, but there's much less of that. Best as I can tell, they're entirely separating WW from the rest of the League and putting the boys on most of the stuff and the girls on the rest.

To top it off, the DC Super Friends childrens books also don't include WW, or any female superheroes. The only women who appear are woman being rescued by the male league members.

Weird. In every store I've seen they have the Justice League as Supes, Bats, Wondy, and GL(and merchandise with the first three on them individually but no GL stuff). All the notebooks even have a logo with them four on the back.

Also, I've seen a few DC Super Friends children's books with WW(read one in the store the other day with her and Batman facing off against Cheetah, Minerva!, and Catwoman) and WW has her own collection of children's books.

On other notes, I got these(would have preferred something like 'Great Hera!' for WW's, but I still like it) as a gift last week, made this year so presumably for the 75th.

Not to say it's not a problem. Just wondering now what's with the conflicting messages. Even that page shows Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. Not a trace of Flash.

For a female variation, I don't think Zatanna, Oracle, Power Girl, or Black Canary would work. The characters need to be identifiable by their silhouette and symbol, and none of those ladies has a symbol. (Although you could probably put Zatanna's or Canary's fishnets in white.)

But WW is a huge omission on the logo. Perhaps because her new look is iconic enough? Still, for the sake of an anniversary logo, her old silhouette with the chest plate in white should be there.

Oracle does have a symbol actually and it's been used often. Placed on a computer on her lap, I think she'd be identifiable.

Hm, considering the Batman and Superman both have successful movies, with a Green Lantern one well into production and a Flash one on the way, it's concievable that they didn't include Diana as they felt that these days she wouldn't be as automatically recognisable as the other four.

Green Lantern's movie isn't out for a year. Flash's movie hasn't even been firmed up yet. But Wonder Woman who was just on the front page of every paper and blog because she put on pants is the one you don't would be recognizable?

I guess I'm idealistic, but this hurts. I can even see how Diana would fit on the pin, right between Bats and Supes if they move Supes a little to the left.

I guess my thoughts are not just within the DC but just culturally that at least there should be A woman there and of course than being DC it SHOULD be Wonder Woman.

Female readership and female superheros are a large market share and as we are beginning to see in the collectible markets in the US that women are outpacing men in a lot of previous male dominated areas of memorabilia (correct me if I'm wrong Icon, I'm an amateur collector and in some other memorabilia - so far that it - God help us all)

That IS weird, because, the female issue aside, A: she's one of the most recognizable superheroes DC has - she had her own TV show, if nothing else; a lot of people remember her from that, and she's been in 'JLU' - B: the other two choices on there are far from DC's best-known; not that Flash or GL are obscure by any means, but... still, they're not in the Big t Three's ballpark, and C: Wondy should DEFINITELY be on ANY memorabilia to do with DC's 75th Anniversary, because she's one of only three superheroes to be consistently in publication for virtually all that time! Can Flash and GL boast that? No, they cannot - they kinda fizzled out at the end of the Golden Age, and when they picked up again, they were new characters. Surely the characters on a 75th Anniversary pin ought to be those who are, y'know, 75 years old, or the closest you can get? The 'classic' Flash and GL are legacy characters who have changed identities multiple times over the years; they should not be on a pin with characters who have consistently been in the picture since the late '30's early '40's. If there's room for them, why isn't there room for Wondy? Does not compute.
