Ye-ah - just a TAD bit over the top, but that was hardly atypical of the era. Comics were scrambling madly to address this radical notion called 'feminism', and they tended not to be what you would call subtle. Super feminine intuition? Er-hrrm - yes.
Personally, I don't interpret Bill as a jerk so much as a nice guy with outdated, chauvinist views. They're clearly happy enough together; the issue is more that his wanting her to be a nice little housewife is a disadvantage when she has to strike out on her own.
I have to admit, I'm not sure why Greer is so surprised that Dr. Tumolo would 'take HIS money' in that one panel. I mean, they don't know that he's a lunatic at that point, right? (Unless, of course, the issue is the 'he' part.)
And I fear you are incorrect about this being the first solo female ongoing in the MU. That would be 'Blonde Phantom', back in the '40's - there were actually several female-oriented books back then, but they didn't last very long.
