Day 24: Most Hated Costume.

What costume encapsulates how comic fans feel about the 90s? Well for me it's something that can only be solved with a 3-way dance! Tonight in this very ring three awfully dressed super-heroes will face off in a no-holds barred triple threat match to the death!

In the left corner, we have Jared Stevens, Fate. And before you ask yes he thought melting down Dr Fate's helmet to make a kewl dagger, throwing darts, and shoulder pad would be totally bad-ass.





And in the red corner we have Chase Lawler... Manhunter!





And finally representing the Marvel Universe we have the heroine who somehow managed to undergo 4 costumes in less than two years! Mattie Franklin Spider-Woman!

I've been checking out THE BOOK OF FATE, the second attempt at a Jared Stevens Fate book, this one by Keith Giffen and Ron Wagner. I'm... kind of amazed at how I don't really hate it. In fact, I'm kind of enjoying it. I feel dirty for admitting that, but damn, it's the closest thing I've ever seen to Bruce Campbell's Ash as a superhero.

Also, his new costume is still stupid, but actually LESS so than his original, posted here.

How could Manhunter have thrown that knife in the second cover if his shoulder pads won't let him move his arms more than half way up?

Honestly, I already hated Archangel's costume. That stupid blue and purple bodysuit.

Also, now that I think of it, I was never a fan of Sabertooth's costume; I could never tell where the costume begins and the person ends with that one.

To be fair, Sue was wearing that at a time when she was still coming off some bad Malice Mojo, so she at least has an excuse for dressing like a female stripper.

As for Kitty, well she's gone through more costume changes than Madonna, and she was a teenager at the time, in the eighties. It was a time of bad decisions.

It's funny I really do like the top half of that outfit of Sue's. If you gave it pants I'd consider it perfect even.

I used to love that costume of Kitty's. Then again, I was probably 5 or 6 when that issue came out. I'll have to try to find out the year.

The roller skates, on the other hand, I always thought were a hazard--and awful looking. Given that she was taking fashion tips from the disco version of Dazzler at the time, though, I can understand it.

Oh, yeah, motto on Sue. The original Malice is easily on retro's List of Top 10 Worst Costumes. Without context that looks like Emma Frost cosplaying (especially the gloves) as Sue while the real Sue is in the background. One of the best things I like about the Four is when Reed, Sue and Johnny all wear the same uniform (Ben gets a pass for being a little hard to fit).

Ok the previous Dr Fate got turned into a senior citizen during Zero Hour and lost his helmet. A treasure hunter/grave robber finds Dr Fate's Helmet in Egypt and is later attacked by a big demon. He tries using Dr Fate's amulet but it blows up giving him a big ankh shaped scar.

So he later melts down the helmet to makes a big scary knife to fight the demon.

I see the Manhunter pic, and the only thing I can think is "What the hell is Spawn doing there and how the hell did he change his demon-costume thing into a white one?"

Y'know, it says nothing can stop the Skinwalker, but it looks to me like ManHunter's got it. Spoilery covery is spoilery!

I actually kind of like that second Spider-Woman costume, though I think I'd like it more if it covered her face completely.

That would be an improvement, though to my eyes black and orange still clash, but that's kind of subjective, and the midsection of the costume looks a bit sparse. Maybe if it had a spider-symbol on the back to contrast that it'd work better.
