A mystery only works if it makes logical sense when explained, this one is insane on so many levels it makes the Scooby Doo seem like Elmore Leonard. Starting with the primary motivation, which amounts to something along the lines of...

"Despite having been happily divorced from my husband, with whom I have kept cordial relations since as we are both mature adults, and me being a successful woman in my own right. I am now going to enact an insanely overcomplicated plan to try and win him back for NO BLOODY REASON WHATSOEVER. This will involve me attempting to disorient a colleagues beloved spouse by using my former husbands shrinking equipment (Which canonically does not WORK on most other people on earth) to tap dance inside her inner ear, but I will bring along a fully prepped and working flamethrower in case I need to, y'know, torch her body or something like that. Oh, and then hire a third party villain to murder the father of a hero whose identity I have no plausible reason to ever actually have known"

And that's ignoring the likes of the "I make stabby" scene...

I will admit that the climatic scene did have holes one could drive a truck through but I have to admit that her unnerving smile and Palmer's reaction or horror were really great to me.

Again, I like the entire thing, the ending holes didn't really break the comic for me, I've seen and read enough mysteries with twist endings that suck to not let them ruin the otherwise good start and middle.

It would have been better had it been a story set in it's own continuity ala Kurt Busiek's Astro City.

Seeing how writers like Greg Rucka are able to portray 'rape' in a story without making it a gimmick or anything makes me feel as though Meltzer didn't have the chops to write what was handed to him.

I don't blame you if you like the story since my problems lie with the story itself and those who choose to publish it and I think even the worst stories out there at least have some good bits here and there.

Oh I love detective stories, have done for decades, and if Meltzer had managed to pull off a proper mystery in a world where superpowers were a given I'd have applauded him mightily, but this wasn't a twist ending, this was a "Makes less sense than English as She is Spoke" ending

The thing for me is this:

I realize that twist endings can suck ass. They can suck a lot of ass. I mean, The Village and other movies with twists can easily be either seen from a mile away or make no god damn sense. I can separate the ending though. I can enjoy the ride and realize that while the ending sucked, what led up to it may have been very good.

Identity Crisis does have an ass pull bullshit ending in many ways. It pulls a "Who Shot Mr. Burns" by having a killer who no one suspected because it was nonsensical. Yet the way the ending was done was still well done to me even if it made no sense.

And before someone else enters the conversation saying 'yeah, well she might have been bitter and angry the whole time, we just didn't see it.'

I, as, a massive detective fiction fan say 'that's not how a mystery works'. It's effectively a RETCON to make characters fit the plot, in a mystery you have to fit the mystery to the characters. You don't selectively pick and choose canon and motivations like Geoff Johns and DC continuity, you have to take the whole load whether you like it or not because if you don't have all your bases covered, especially when dealing with previously established characters, then your mystery goes down the same way the Titanic did.

And I'm going to need a macros of 'not how a mystery works' stat!

Could we get an "Agatha Christie Does Not Approve" as a companion to this one?

How about "Agatha Christie and the Doctor Do Not Approve"? Totally one of my favorite episodes.

Bariman, not really a fan of Dr. Who so I wouldn't be sure where to get an appropriate pic.

Awesome!

Umm...how about 'Sir' Arthur Conan Doyle for added effect?

But I'll save this one anyway. :)
