I love love love pre-megalomadman, Superbuddies-era Max Lord and Sue Dibny together. Let me show you why!


Here is Sue being awesome and running rings around Max in Formerly Known As the Justice League 3.





JLA Classified 4, or I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League 1 if you prefer, is mega-Max/Sue material. The issue opens with Max and L-Ron entering the office, and Max being frustrated by his inability to get Sue to respond to his greetings. Sue apparently perceives this the way Charlie Brown hears his parents' voices; L-Ron enlightens her, but Max refuses to be mollified by her belated return greeting. Which sets us up for the snit Max is still in when Sue tells him she's just met the new neighbor.





Through a Wacky Misunderstanding - involving Booster and Beetle, natch - Ralph becomes convinced - well, you'll see.



Look at that reaction from Max, just look at it! Is he a dog in the manger or what?


So there you have it, my never-gonna-happen fantasy OTP. Then DC hadda go ruin everything by making Max all Evil!Psycho!Villain!, and we won't even discuss what they did to Sue *shudder* But ah well, we'll always have Superbuddies!

There's no way that Max could keep up with Sue like that if his heart wasn't in it. I say Earth-3!Max replaced the real Max, who's waiting somewhere for rescue from the Superbuddies.

And then, Identity Crisis. Anyone who tries to tell me what a great writer Brad Meltzer is (or tries to pawn it off on editorial) can help themselves to a bag of richards. (Not Reed.)

yeah, nothing I've read of Meltzer's comic works have convinced me that he's a particularly good writer. wtf was up with his JLA run? you've got some of the most powerful heroes in the DCU and the first thing they go up against is a malfunctioning Amazo that barely even threatens a neighborhood? can't help but compare it to the start of Morrison's run when they were up against the Hyperclan.

Oh man, this is one of my really, really, really guilty 'ships. I love Ralph and Sue. They're one of my favorite canon ships, they're an example of one of my favorite tropes, yadda yadda yadda.

But I was definitely shipping Max/Sue. Guilty guilty guilty.

eh, Max doesn't seem like that great a character, so him being evil doesn't bother me. From what I've seen of his earlier appearences vs the Supperbuddies stuff he was originally far more of a manipulator.

Maybe you could fanwank it that Sue's death set Max over the age or maybe...nah. Never mind.

And of course Meltzer just had to make Sue pregnant in IC as well which makes the last scan above (which I believe came out in JLA: Classified at either at the same time or after IC) all the more poignant or disquieting. DC would much rather rape and decapitated heads be what they're known for these days rather than old fashioned comic fun. I wish I knew why (sales can't be the only reason).

Wasn't that the reason? I remember hearing that his being "evil" was only a recent thing (so as to jive with Martian Manhunter reading him as a good guy) supposedly spurred on because he grew to distrust the superheroes after hearing they began the attitude adjustments on the villains and Sue being left undefended on the Watchtower.
