It's a cute lead-in, sure, but... why was Death startled? I mean, she was there to take him wherever he's going, after all - right? What was surprising about this to her? For my part, I'm surprised she wasn't sitting calmly two feet from the bull's-eye, just waiting for him to hit the ground.
