Wasn't Guy Gardener supposed to be Hal's first successor? Did something happen to him here to disqualify him from Green Lanternship?

Always wanted to read some John, though. Never got a good handle on him as a Lantern.

Green Lantern #184.

Contains a story about guy almost becoming a successor and the reason of him not being pick while john was taken over. :)

Wasn't it because Guy got brain damage or was otherwise made invalid for a while?

Guy was a gym teacher for special needs kids (really), an earthquake left a bus full about to go over a cliff. With no powers guy saved them, but while saving the last one, well, lets just say the bus landed on him. He lived, but was bed ridden (and eventually ended up comatose).

The guardians seeing Hal's backup was no longer fit for service found a new successor, John Stewart. Until a renegade Guardian forced Guy out of his coma to be his personal GL (thus causing Guy's initial 'brain damage')

Wasn't he also a lawyer at some point? As I recall, 'Emerald Dawn 2' starts with Hal in jail and Guy as his court-appointed defender.

Not a lawyer he was a social worker (Yes, bad ass 'bad boy' of the Green Lanterns was a social worker). Later he gave up that line of work and became a physical education teacher for special needs kids.

Guy is a jerk, but he's a jerk with a heart of pure gold. If you're the the 'little guy' he will break his back trying to help you.

That DOES make more sense - I had a little difficulty picturing Guy as a lawyer. 'Let's cut the crap, yer honor - my client is innocent, and I got a great big green boxing glove in front of your face to prove it. Now say he's free to go, or prepare to count yer fillings!'

Why did he resign anyways?
And I like how everyone has an issue about this XD Makes it realistic, but not overdone.

I belive that the reason given was simply that Hal was fed up with G.L. work and wanted to be able to spend more time with Carol and his pilot job.

Wasn't there also something about him complaining about always being away from Earth, and the Guardians (to be fair, quite rightly) pointing out that he's the Lantern for an entire sector, not just one planet and he knew that when he agreed to become a permanent GL?

There was that, which I think Hal thought was part of the Guardians always telling him what to do. At some point, they made him stay off of Earth for an entire year, I think a little before he quit.

Given the fact this is from over 25 years ago (God I feel old), I think you mean that Rags Morales succesfully developed a style like Dave Gibbons! :) (Not disagree, just noting that priority should go to Gibbons here!

Yes, and as I said, that suggests Morales can emulate Gibbons, not the other way round.

I said that this looks, in places, like Morales drew it

Ah, GL(s) of this era were all win in my book.

I do have a GL-related request if anyone out there is listening. Does anyone have DC Comics Presents 26 with GL/Superman? It's the first appearance of the New Teen Titans so really hard to get, though it was reprinted in B & W for Showcase. Anyway, I am really interested in scans of Archon Z'gmora, a GL who dies in that issue. He's probably only on one page, but I haven't been able to track down this issue for a reasonable price. Thanks.

*claps hands*

Thanks a lot! John Stewart's return as GL is quite interesting, and it's great to see some standard DCU Gibbons work - although the Guardian's heads aren't all that greatly shaped. (also, Hal's look on page 3, panel 2? I swear I've seen it at least thrice in Watchmen.) =P

Anyway, thanks again; does Hal return to being Green Lantern later in the run or did John take over for a good while?

I suppose in present continuity, " where I know you from " could be interpreted as " that barfight we had once back when we were both still serving "

I think it's more that it's only just then sinking in that his stint as GL really IS over - this isn't just a vacation or something; someone else has taken up the mantle, and that means a big part of his life has come to a close.

John Stewart - a man who looooooves his cereal.
I wonder if that 'everyone as GL' bit is a tribute to to the similar situation Bullseye finds himself in in 'Daredevil', or whether it's the other way round? Either way, it's a great sequence.

Things which are hilarious: Hal Jordan ignoring his girlfriend in favor of his manpain. "Dammit, Carol, will you stop rubbing my shoulders suggestively? I'm trying to frame myself dramatically against a background of stars here!" Carol sighs and heads off to the kitchen to open another bottle of wine, wondering whether breaking out the Star Sapphire outfit or yelling that Hal's a capitalistic flunky of the fascist corporate fatcats would give her a better chance of getting laid tonight.

Huh- I don't think I knew John didn't know Hal's secret identity straight from the start. When did he find out, then?

I wouldn't be surprised if Gibbons didn't take that "everybody's a Green Lantern" street scene directly from Frank Miller's similar scene very early on in his Daredevil run, where Bullseye's hallucinating the same. Also, it's worth comparing this to Gibbons' work on Watchmen, where Moore really opened him up to some of the things that he was capable of, but are only hinted at here.
