One page asking THE question a lot of us want answered.

"..because Stephanie needed the test. And everybody deserves a second chance."

So the honest to truth real reason. The Big Red Cheese scout's honor. Cross DC's heart and hope that no more Teen Titans die.

But-so, basically, Cass' only "job" to fulfill was to vacate her current role just so Stephanie could have it? What?He couldn't have "tested Stephanie" without making Cass leave her family and the best home she's known? He couldn't have helped Steph without isolating Cass?

As someone said above, the only interpretation that makes this ok was that Cass was doing this for Steph, her best friend (despite the fact that Steph didn't even try to check up on her, for safety's sake?). Man, this is such a difference from Stephanie saying, "I refuse to give up being Batgirl." I know Cass is dedicated to the idea of the Bat, but surely she's now that loyal that she'd just drop the personna which helped her get on track with her life as soon as Bruce ordered her too. As Stephanie said, he doesn't have the right to take being Batgirl away from her, Bat-symbol or not.

Nice try, but this reeks of bad writing trying to cover bad writing. How did the writer get Steph so right and Cass so wrong?

Presumably Cass is also off doing other important stuff.

That is to say, this way he has two strong bats (Cass and Steph) instead of one (Cass), and Cassandra's doing some Very Important Stuff that'll also be unveiled.

Ok, I could get that he's having Cass multi-tasking by vacating the position and doing her own thing, but he doesn't really say that she's also busy. He could have said, "I need Cassandra elsewhere and Stephanie needed to fill that spot and prove herself," or something that indicates better that Cass is doing the "Very Important Stuff."

But I'm picky about writing, even (especially?) if it surrounds Cass' disappearance/return.

well, for one thing Cass' history makes her damn near impossible to do right. And I imagine it'd be more like "I need you to do this stuff for me, as Cassandra, so since you'll be gone you should leave the Batgirl costume for Stephanie.
