Have to say that I didn't hate Kick-Ass (though I also liked the movie adaptation more since I'm kinda tired of utterly-grim superhero genre deconstructions). This looks to be on par with the first.

I do like the art, but then, I'm a fan of Romita Jr.

See, the concept is interesting: instead of a Mr. Miyagi or other old man as a mentor, we get the opposite, a little girl who's younger than her protege. Tamora Pierce did something similar (to much better effect, I must say) with a cranky, tough-love, 13-year-old mentor and a reluctant adult student, but it was actually good because the mentor had her own PTSD baggage and other flaws, but wasn't unkind.


Just because you swear and can kill men seven doesn't ways doesn't make you cool or an adult. You have the ability, but not the emotional or mental maturity that is supposed to come with your training, which means that you end up having nothing at all. Any thug can kill, but it takes great maturity and presence of mind to be a great warrior. Likewise, anybody can bully someone or teach them something, but it doesn't make them a realteacher or mentor.

And that is why I am unimpressed.

You know, I actually liked the first Kick Ass. It was really gory, over the top, etc., but I went into it knowing what to expect.
And this, I don't know, I'll wait till it's done before picking it up in trade. The Rihanna comment about domestic violence is like one of those Family Guy jokes that just crosses a line for me. Particularly not when I saw the insane amount of victim blaming when it came to Rihanna's case.

I just finished the first three issues of Nemesis with my s/o and we were both raising our eyebrows and chatting about it afterwards. I just don't know Mark Millar, I don't know...

Eh, I said it once, I'll say it again. I actually like Millar's work... except for Nemesis..was liking that book until the whole impregnating his enemy's daughter with her brother's product deal...that and the man penis in War Heroes..just..all in your face and lastly Civil War..which was so one-sided throughout with no chance of hope.

Other than that, like most of his stuff, specifically The Ultimates and Ultimate Avengers. I like Kick-Ass..except for the ending..that just sucked..I mean seriously all that and he couldn't even beat up a jock? And don't get me started on the girl he liked... This book is no different from the last sooo no complaints here... Unless it yet again ends with him still being a wimp and things not getting any better. At least it's his own stuff and characters. Plus, the Karate Kid comment in particular made me laugh.

Same, I was pretty squicked out by that. Obviously that's what he wants, that over the top, super squick out factor. The art's pretty fantastic, but the over the top ultra killing and goreporn is a bit much. It gets to a point where it's hard to suspend disbelief, but I'm also assuming that's what Millar is going for.

It's got it's flaws (while I like this scene, part of me thinks that Kick-Ass and the Big Daddy/Hit-Girl dynamic should have been in separate books), but I thought Kick-Ass was pretty fun, and I'm curious to see how this goes.
