I think Marc-Oliver Frisch hit the nail on the head:
"I think the reality is much worse than that: Mark Millar's work is popular because he's a demagogic talent who has, like nobody else, perfected the art of appealing to his audience's worst and basest instincts in a way that doesn't just absolve them from experiencing any guilt from the pleasure that comes with it, but even makes them think it's cool, because it comes with just enough of a "plausible deniability" sheen to shrug it off as satire, or as stupid popcorn entertainment that's not meant to be taken seriously.

I liked this one from the comments:

"WANTED and KICK-ASS don't have substance, and Millar knows it; he also knows how to get away with it, and how to use those clichés and the fact that they've rightly been stigmatized to attract the kind of attention and elicit the kind of outrage that in turn fuels his popularity.

I don't think Millar's out to make any statements on gender or race relations or whatever; he's just a hack who knows how to get people riled up, and who uses that "gift" to take what he can as cheaply as he can and as long as he can. "

See, I really believe this too, and for that reason I don't denounce the guy as the Anti-Christ like so many here.

I made a decision a long time ago regarding the Twilight series: as little as that woman deserves to be called an author in any regard, and as insipid as the books, films and fandoms are... it's not for me. It's escapist romantic bullshit for tween girls.

If I rage over it, I look like a "hater," and I empower stupid children to feel justified as counter-cultural. So, I let them enjoy and I bury my nose in a real book. That or something involving Batman.

Millar isn't writing for the net's largest LGBTQ-sponsered, anti-racist, anti-ableist, woman-friendly and otherwise discrimination and harassment free community. You're exactly the buttons he sets out to push. Ignore him.

Meanwhile, I'll be waiting for the second movie.

The man's comics are hit or miss, and the ending of the first comic arc was typical "bite me fanboy roflmao" bullshit, but the movie was great fun for everything except one unfortunate jet-pack.
