True enough, but that doesn't solve the problem. Clark had already established himself as an uber-genius here, that sort of thing follows you.

Maybe Lex had them change their records out of spite, not knowing that Clark'd prefer a life of journalism as opposed to superscience?

That or when Lex shows up, they decide that why have the reluctant second place when there's someone a little smarter whose willing to actually "do something" with it.
