Since it's New Female Character Week, I bring Magdalena Neuntauben of the Order, aka Veda. She's an action film star who adopts orphans and teaches them kung-fu. Her super-power is the ability to create golems from the earth or natural environment.

This comes from The Order #4, where Zombie Robot Hobos are menacing LA. The Order track them to the source of the radio waves that are controlling them. Veda and Henry Hellrung (Anthem) touch down on Skid Row to deal with some social issues as well as smashing Zoboes.

The Order #4 is one of the best single issues of a comic book that I've got.

Either Mulholland Black and Aralune could qualify as great new female characters.

It took ages to work out that Maggie's last line is from the Jewish saying that He who saves one life saves the world entire.

Buy the Next Right Thing at Amazon for cheap.

(PS: I think the last line is actually a take on Wanted's "What have YOU done today?" since she's randomly breaking the fourth wall.)

I suppose I'd... dang, I'm not sure how to even put this.

Er, it's the most- OH! Occam's Razor, there we go. Seeing as how you really had to search to find it, it just seemed more likely to me that it'd be the more obvious thing. I didn't know the saying either. The "world = person" bit could be related to it... it could be both?

Also, Wanted's a (relatively recent, compared to the series) movie and this a positive take on SuperPeople relating to "Real" issues (in stark contrast to Wanted), and it's randomly breaking the fourth wall (like Wanted). I saw a lot of comparisons. I figured it was a bit of a "Take that".

Well, you know a smattering of Jewish sayings. Does everybody reading this comic know a smattering of Jewish sayings? I've never heard this one. I had to search to find it, and I would never have known to search for a reference at all if you hadn't mentioned it. So... if it's a reference, it's pretty stealthy.

Am I alone in not randomly knowing this saying? The fourth wall shattering out of nowhere pretty well threw me off, I'll admit that.

Context is helpful.

...again, can't it be both?

Don't remember the context from the first one.

For the second one, right before she answers that question, its revealed someone has a sex tape on her.

As for the third one, that guy was a baseball player who lost his legs to a drunk driver. At the end of the issue (before he says those lines) we see him show up at the guys trailer park with a bat. (Its implied he kills or attacks him, but in the next issue its revealed they made up and are playing wii sports together.)

Ha, I was misunderstood: I was saying that the images helped my context of the situation.

It's been one of those days. *thud*

(I hate being unable to edit)

What I meant about the "Does everybody"? etc. bit was about my Occam's Razor comparison. I mean, I could easily be wrong and it could easily be a reference to a (to me) obscure Jewish saying, it just seems like the Wanted reference is something that readers of the comic would be more likely to go for.

...Perhaps not on the point, but sometimes you have to look back at a conversation and go "Why on earth is this even being argued"?

It was just my take on the scene. I would have never thought of the line. (Which I finally remembered having heard before in Schindler's list)

Basic tiny facts.

IIRC, She's looking at the camera that's recording her comments for a TV special or something.

At least that's what I tell myself.

Seriously, The Order

Fraction has a LOT of goodwill from me with that book. Although he's been a mess on IIM, The Order is the reason why I haven't cut him off totally as yet.

Loved that comic.

I kept hoping for a Runaways/ The Order crossover. It would have made so much sense - they both operated in LA, they were being published at the same time, and the reason why there would be conflict is already there; Vera learns about a group of orphaned kids with super powers parents running around LA and makes it her personal mission to get them off the streets, and of course the kids want nothing to do with her, since they see her as just another adult trying to run their lives. The story practically could write itself.

And damnit, it never happened.

That would be awesome. I mean I liked the Order a lot (except for Ezekiel Stane, I hate that little fucker.)
