This is a *bit* better than what Spider-Man said in Mark Millar's (final?) FANTASTIC FOUR issue. "Not a day goes by I don't wish she (Gwen) had never met me."

Some of what MJ says reminds me of the MARVEL SAGA issue where Jim Shooter talked about why Peter Parker should get married: Yes, he's all about responsibility, but he has a responsibility to himself to at least TRY to be happy.

I pretty much agree with the sentiment here. I didn't get the impression that Peter asked Carlie to be his girlfriend because he loves her, but that he did so out of obligation. Granted, the idea that Peter is afraid to make his intentions clear due to his fear of Spider-Man getting the way is clear enough, but Carlie still comes across like a needy, emotionally guilt-tripping hypocrite to the point where one has to ask, “Why would Peter even want to go out with this woman?” And having Mary Jane--the former Mrs. Spider-Man of all people--play matchmaker for them certainly doesn’t help promote the idea that Peter and Carlie make for an ideal couple, no matter how hard Marvel wants this to be the case. In fact, the above scene and how MJ is characterized here actually reinforces the notion that she is the woman Peter still ought to be with.

Hmm, perhaps Carlie is dressed as the Black Cat--the same woman he’s been secretly having a causal relationship on the side--may be symbolic of how doomed Peter and Carlie's new relationship really is.

Honestly, my biggest problem with Peter/Carlie is that it's been 100+* issues since the pairing first got teased, and yet I have absolutely no idea what Peter and Carlie see in each other. I think I could make a better case for Peter and Michelle than I could for Peter and Carlie, and Pete/Michelle would the Adventures of Downtrodden White Guy and Bitchy Latina Stereotype.

*Ugh, how depressing to think that BND's spanned almost a sixth of Amazing Spider-Man.

Brand New Day is over? After what, two years? When something happens for a couple of issues, it's an event that can be over. When something goes on for two years and includes everything that happens, it's just the name of the book. So, in essence, they're making a big deal about changing the name. The unofficial name. That no one really used.

Eh. I like Peter and Mary Jane a lot, but I would be okay with him being in a relationship with Felicia or Gwen instead. You know, as long as it was written well. Even if there was retconning involved, as long as everything still made sense in context overall. But a lot of it wasn't written well. Big chunks still don't make a whole lot of sense. And I really don't like Carlie. At all. Not as a character, and certainly not as Peter's significant other. I am glad to see this damn event end, though. I do like some things, like Peter having a private identity again, Harry being alive, things like that. I just don't like the way most of this was executed.

I do, however, find the art of this issue oddly endearing, at least mostly. The stylization is actually rather charming when it's not chock full of art fail like some of the bits of the preview were. Fascinating...

Also: I am pleased that Harry is alive. His baby son is very cute. Very, very cute, especially when wearing the tiniest Doc Ock Halloween costume ever created. Awwww...

I just figured out what I REALLY hate about this; the very last line.

"I'm just a guy who tries to do the right thing and this, this feels like the rightest thing in the world."

It takes the idea that Spider-Man is built upon, that Spider-Man puts the needs of other people before his own-"Great responsiblity" and all that, which MJ has also just told us isn't really a big deal-and subverts it so that the "rightest thing" is him getting what he wants. Stopping supervillians, that's sort of right, but making out with someone in a Black Cat costume, that's the rightest thing in the world.

It's perfectly reasonable that he would want to have a life of his own, and probably necessary so he doesn't go insane, but I don't buy dressing it up as the noble choice.

Right, so, considering the stupid, stupid, stupid retcon that MJ couldn't handle Spidey-Marriage because of the danger, yet seems to have no trouble getting him involved with another woman, I've decided that MJ is throwing Peter at Carlie in order to get her targeted by the other villains after him. See, Carlie's only pretending to be the most boring character alive. She's really a future supervillain. And MJ knows and is trying to get rid of her before she can destroy the world. Because MJ is a sneaky chessmaster trying to save us all.

That's my headcanon, and you can't make me change it.

Second...Carlie in that suit is just horrible. Nobody likes her. So I hope Felicia turns up and skins her out of it.
