Another post for Awesome New Female Characters Week - Introducing Spider-girl Araña, created by Fiona Avery.

Anya Corazon, is the half Mexican and half Puerto Rican 15 year old seconded by the super secret Spider Society (try saying that three times fast) to act as their agent in the fight against the evil Sisterhood of the Wasp. And despite this daft origin, she has risen above it to be awesome all over the place and shortly in her own (probably soon to be canceled) solo series.

I picked up the digest of her origin from Amazing Fantasy and it's definitely worth the five bucks it cost me.

Hopefully so. Not sure if the digests are still in print, but with a solo book outing for the character as the new Spider-girl coming up, I'd imagine the stories must be available in one form or another.

Hasn't she chaned her costume? I recall Mattie Franklin's short run as Spider-Woman (or was it Spider Girl?) was marked with a new costume each story arc.

She has now - she's taken on the black Spider-woman outfit and the Spider-girl codename, which is why the "Too obvious" line in this scene has a nice ring of irony about it.

Dr Cecilia Reyes was Puerto Rican, and she was on the scene from 1997. She was afro Puerto Rican, a practising doctor, and didn't want to join the X-men at all.

To be fair to Fraction she's had a couple of pages in the past few months.

In September she went to retrieve one of the Five Lights in Mexico. (Of course everyone spoke English in that scene for some reason, but that's been a problem through out this entire arc). She even used her power for the first time since M-Day (okay it was more like Psylocke was treating her like a puppet and using Cecilia's powers to put a forcefield around the room which was weird because Cecilia's powers have never worked that way and her very bland and impersonal dialogue made it clear that she could have been replaced by just about any other forcefield making/telekinetic mutant in that scene, including Betsy and no one would notice)

And last month she was discussing with Kavita Rao the upcoming mutant epidemic (though once again I felt she could have been replaced by Beast or any one else with a Science background and you wouldn't even notice the difference) some sort of awful disease that attacks mutant DNA and is slowly spreading through Utopia (you'd think they'd have put everyone in quarantine by now, if they already know about it why wait until the next arc?).

So she's being used and she's around. How well is a matter of opinion.

Generic dialogue that could have been said by anyone seems to be the common complaint about Fraction. I'd go further and say it was the generic and bad dialogue that made me drop the book.

Anya's a really fun character. Her first book was kind of all over the place but I still loved it.

Can't wait for the new book.

Yeah, Anya's one of those characters where the actual character is better, a lot of the time, than the material she's appearing in. As a comic/story the Araña stuff isn't that great. But Anya herself is.

Her reactions to the various costumes (lol, superhero mockery) was just awesome.

And what about that Julia Carpenter? And Madame Web. Always liked them...

No, actually, I didn't say anything about BND. Anya's costume and codename switch happened in Young Allies, not the Grim Hunt storyline.

And honestly? Anybody in the Marvel U. that has a spider motif and spider-like powers that isn't Spider-Man is going to be at least a little derivative of him, no matter how the writers try to differentiate them otherwise.

She's being awesome in Young Allies. What, you're not reading it? For shame.

Too late now, of course, as no one else was reading it either, apparently, and the book's cancelled.

She's lost the carapace, but she still has the more genericy enhanced strength and agility stuff. She's not entirely powerless, but adjusting.

Besides her hair making her slightly very obvious, I'm loving her costume choice :D Plus, she's a really cool character.

I'm definitely waiting on her solo title. May she have at least 100 issues, just like May Parker did.

I am a great fan of civvie spandex and plucky females, so I`m pretty much sold here! Trade and solo, here I come ~~~

At the time this came out, I kinda resented her introduction because I was a big Spider-Girl fan and this came off as Marvel's trying to reinvent the wheel to Mayday's disadvantage. I've since mourned and moved on and like this better than her current incarnation.

Late on this but I had to comment. I love Arana! I had been thinking of doing her for this Awesome New Female Characters thing but I didn't have any scans, so I'm really, really happy to see someone else show her the love she deserves. ^___^

xD And the costume bit was excellent! What comic is she in again? Amazing Fantasy? *notes* (I have two comic books from her solo series but I wasn't aware of her being in anything else.)
