cyberghostface: (Spidey & MJ)
[personal profile] cyberghostface posting in [community profile] scans_daily

Hopefully after BND!Spider-Man dies a horrible and prolonged death, we'll find out that the real Peter Parker was tied up in Norman Osborn's closet since the events of Civil War.

And then the real Peter will return to his job as a teacher, with his aunt and wife, both confidantes of his secret identity, at his side.

A man can hope, can't he?

For legality, Web of Spider-Man #50.

ugh!!!! Didn't we already get this a few years ago when Spider-Man was actually a good book?

I rather liked The Other and the whole Spider Totem thing.

I... really didn't. It's not that it was poorly written or the characters weren't engaging, but the fact that it tied Spider-Man's sciency origin into shamanic destiny felt really out-of-left-field. I want to say it's why the story gets the flak it does from some, and it's a fairly valid, non fanboyish argument.

The story would've held more water with me if it was aloft in mystery. The ending of him fully embracing the totem and cocooning himself and all was too literal and fairly overwrought and stupid. Mary Jane watched him eat a guy's head, for fuck's sake.

IT really gets tiresome when people need to ritually denounce all negative opinions while explaining that the ones they agree with are special.

Good job refuting that the story's climax was Spider-Man EATING SOMEONE'S HEAD.

Yeah, among the reasons why the Other was so terrible was at least for me personally, I liked the Spider-Totem thing as it had been left in that last story arc before Sins Past, it was a nicely understated expansion of the mythos that didn't really need to be beaten to death with ultraliteralism.

Well, the Other did have Mary Jane saying "Being Spider-Man is a drawn out suicide attempt, as you feel so guilty over your uncle's death." I never fully got that.

The spider-totem thing was OK; but the Other was just bad.

Also, it wasn't really about him being dead for any significant amount of time, unlike this one.

Plus, this one is a chance to do something about OMD.

Seriously, "dying" and being resurrected had zero impact for the title and what little changes in the status quo there were--Peter gaining new powers like the "stingers"--were all wiped clean come BND.

Are they still pretending that he still has them while not referring to them in any way whatsoever like they were at the beginning of OMBND?

Yeah, they didn't even let him stay dead for an entire issue. And aside of MJ and the Avengers no one even knew (or cared) that he was dead.

Not counting the MA and Avengers versions, of course.

... I perceive the desperation of a bad stand-up comedian. Or maybe a bad stage magician, one who keeps doing his lame tricks lamely, and jabbering, "HA! 'Ja see that, kid? Magic! Hah? Hah? There's also Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach, Nyamo-sensei and Yomi from Azumanga Daioh, Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (twice), Nagato Yuki from the same, Suiseiseki and the protagonist boy from Rozen Maiden, L from Death Note (also twice), Zelgadis from Slayers (thrice!), Negi from Mahou Sensei Negima, some dude from Naruto, Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop and I'm pretty sure the pink-haired girl in the second row is from an eroanime.

It really does help to imagine Quesada as a twelve year old fan fic author,

My theory? Quesada wants the classic story THE OTHER to be in continuity again. This won't be a new story; just reprints of THE OTHER, with MJ digitally replaced by Carlie Cooper.

From: [identity profile] an-idol-mind.livejournal.com
My first reaction is, "It's about damned time." More than any superhero ever, Spider-Man could really use a death and rebirth storyline to help redefine the character and reboot things for new readers.

My second reaction is that this is probably Marvel's best chance at retconning One More Day. Spider-Man dies, goes to Hell for having made a deal with the Devil, and thus is in direct contact with Mephisto. Being in direct contact with Mephisto causes the deal to be null and void thanks to the clause that Mary Jane added about Mephisto never bothering Peter again, and BAM...we go back to pre-One More Day continuity.

Okay, I know that won't happen as long as Quesada is in charge, but this is a potential out for a comic book whose sales have tanked since the stupid decision to have Spidey make that deal.
