IDW's Dungeons & Dragons

As I still await a source of scans for the OUTSTANDING first issue of IDW's ongoing D&D series, I realized the comm didn't get any of that delicious preview-sized issue zero from a few months ago

And so, have three out of it's ten pages. (:

We join our intrepid band as they journey through a dungeon in pursuit of gnolls that ransacked a caravan.


Heh, halflings.


Heh, elves.

They find that the thieves don't have the royal treasure they're in pursuit of (to return (for a reward)), but instead find a band of slavers.
The halfling says it's not their problem, but when has the voice of reason ever been listened to at the gaming table? (:



Heh, Tieflings...

And that's all for now. I'll get up pages from the ongoing's first official issue as soon as I can, and I hope someone else will be able to get up more than just my allotted four. (:

My guess is she's a Tiefling, a sort of demonic half-breed.

A tiefling (descendants of an ancient human empire that made pacts with devils) warlock (spellcasters who draw their magic from pacts with powerful entities).

I picked this up at NYCC and was quite surprised when it was actually good. Gonna have to start picking it up regular-like, I think. I quite enjoyed Bree in particular and the party dynamic in general.

And wow, IDW is full of awesome. First the megacrossover with Transformers/GB/G.I. Joe/Star Trek with zombies and now this?

It's so refreshing to see new mediums/subjects in comics that aren't the hased storylines in Marvel and DC.

I got this with my PAX Prime swag bag and enjoyed it so much that I've read it a couple more times since. Issue #1 will be the first comic I've bought unread in quite possibly years. It's just ~fun~ and that's something I've found lacking from a lot of comics lately.

Tielfing. A subrace of humans in 3rd edition, a full fledged basic race in 4th. Basically they're distant descendents of demons or fiends (NOT half breeds, that would simply be Half Demon) but a quarter or a third in 3rd ed lore.

In 4th ed they're all that remainsof an ancient empire that intermarried with fiends and demons for power (unless i'm mixing them up with Dragonborn).

In either case, a tielfing is basically a person that is part evil interdimensional being, and they tend to be quicker and more clever (and flame resistant) then humans, but with a tendency to be..well, evil, due to hormonal differences as well as cultural pressures (more or less universally hated)

I wanna know how the FIGHTER made the spotcheck to see the elven ranger hiding in brush wearing what is clearly a cloak of elven kind.

Gnolls are weaker then Orcs, but also tend to be more clever and tactically flexible (if we're speaking of the more common and weaker orcs, rather then Orogs and such). Their favored class is Ranger, and they prefer to ambush their prey and fight in packs.

I dunno, they seem fairly stereotypical to me. Aloof and Snarky elven ranger, Pragmatic Human Fighter, Amoral Halfling Rogue, Magicky tiefling, honorbound Dwarf bellowing the names of his gods.

At least the dwarf doesn't have a scottish accent.

Unless that Dwarf is a cleric (which he could very well be, mentioning Moradin every five seconds and using his favord weapon), I am displeased with their lack of party balance.

It would be awesome if he was the Bard.

D&D, or more correctly, the Forgotten Realms Setting makes GREAT Fodder for comic books, because many of the good adventures or books straight up read like one.

Salvatore generally works better as a comic book, IMHO.

You can only hear about "several hundred pounds of panther" colliding so many times.

The first full issue reveals he's a Paladin, who can make a decent healer.

And the primary abilities for the classes make it entirely possible he's multiclassed Bard. ;)

Also, the Underdark isn't FR exclusive anymore, it's part of the core "Points of Light" setting, which issue 1 establishes as being the setting for this comic, referencing the three worlds (regular, Feywild, and Shadowfell).

It even has a counterpart in the Shadowfell, the "Shadowdark" (it's so horrible a name that I am forced to love it).

Wis is always a good choice if you have extra points in your build. Because a failed will save usually leads to very bad things.

Seriously, my barbarian in ddo has 18 will (with a +4 item) and I do haven't regretted it for one minute.

I've still got fond memories of the old Forgotten Realms comics. It wasn't high literature or anything, but it was a fun ride while it lasted. So maybe I'll look into this one too, it doesn't look half bad from this little bit.

John. Rogers. You know how I found John Rogers? enworld. He was writing up his role playing game and sharing it with people. Drunk Southern Girls with Guns is a masterpiece.

If anyone, literally, anyone, can write a good D&D comic, it's him. Or Piratecat. But he's probably better.

Heh, one of my first (and mercifully unpublished) attempts at fanfic was based on them making it to the next level of the Realm, having defeated Venger (in a different way than I later found Requiem did) and them each getting a new weapon/device (For Hank the Ranger, a compass that would point towards what they needed, for Diana the Acrobat, a coil of rope that would obey her like her staff, Sheila the Thief gets an infravision spyglass to spot traps and so on...)

That may be, but I'm still nostalgic about the times when you could have Khelben Arunsun orchestrating a false dwarf marriage ritual between two members of the party to get rid of the looming threat of lawyers invading Waterdeep. And one of those dwarves wasn't even a dwarf.

And the look on the dwarf character's face when he figured what was going on. And when Khelben locked the door behind himself, leaving him and the new 'wife' to spend their 'wedding night'.

Ah, comics just don't not take themselves so seriously nowadays.
