Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #15

In the previous issues, both Jonah and Spider-Man were kidnapped by the "Chameleon" twins. During which, Jonah was shot in the head after discovering that Spider-Man was Peter Parker and one of the Chameleons impersonated Spidey during a crime spree. Jonah survived and was brought to the hospital.

What does he do know that he has the knowledge of who Spidey is?



Wow. Would Jonah ever do that in the 616 universe? I don't think so.

Ultimate!Jonah has always been a little more reasonable, persuadable... sympathetic to Spider-Man. Not entirely in the (magnificently captured) character or vein of Movie!Jonah, but a totally workable route to take with him as 'principled, stubborn-ass newsman'. This kind of move on his part is completely in Ultimate!character, and a nice new direction to explore.

Yeah, from what I've read, the Ultimate version of Jonah has been consistently good--a strong, relatible character who doesn't like Spider-Man, but is moral and just and you can see his reasoning. Meanwhile, Jonah in the 616, while having good moments, has been pretty much a cartoon character since the very first issue he was introduced in.

But, of course, Ultimate Jonah has the advantage that really only one person has written him so far (I don't think he's been seen anywhere else besides USM), while the 616 version has probably had dozens, if not a hundred writers doing him at some point.

Ult!Jonah's also always been, first and foremost, a journalist. Omega Red shows up to beat up Jonah and trash the Daily Bugle office (don't ask) and in the chaos Jonah's there snapping pictures and cowering behind stuff. When the Kingpin sent those three recurring goons (Fancy Dan and the other two, names currently escaping me (Ox?)) to rough Jonah up, in the MIDDLE of them standing there menacing him he's asking questions about who sent them... and it just goes on. After firing Peter at one point (for speaking truth to power), he actually comes TO PETER to talk to him, apologize, and rehire him.

I realize that exaggeration is part and parcel of the mainstream superhero comic, and acknowledge that a lot of "Whaaaaaaaaat." has been achieved in the Ultimate!Marvel comics, but the shift of Ult!Jonah from 'caricature of a political (rather than physical, usually) opponent to Spidey' to 'character fully capable of growth' has really been one of the high points of the series for me.

This was used in O'Neill's and Cowan's reboot of The Question, in which Vic Sage is shot in the head with a low-caliber bullet; there's an entrance wound and an exit wound, but the bullet never penetrated the skull--the slug traveled around the skull, under the scalp. This has actually happened in real life.

Someone finds out Peter Parkerman's identity in USM... and I actually kind of like it. Huh, that actually is a surprise.

Because for once, someone found out his identity and went "Hey wait, this guy rescues like a million kittens and Orphens every day, maybe we SHOULDN'T arbitrarily hate him for Editors purposes"

Ult!Peter Parker being unable to keep his hero identity secret is a reoccurring theme in the comics. :D

The turn-around point for JJJ happened right after/during Ultimatum, when he saw Spider-Man going back and back to pull survivors out of the water.

This works, as far as a reasonable character development. If he found out who Peter was before he became sympathetic to the Spider-Man, well, that's another story.

Nah, Jonah figured it out as kind of a road-to-Damascus moment in issue #13 or #14.

Yeah, but Blake's saying that he was sympathetic to Spider-Man before that, during Ultimatum--especially when he thought that Spider-Man died while rescuing survivors.
