Then Boston gets shot and has a sort of "This is your Life Boston Brand" type of moment and says that he doesn't want to die he wants to live so the ring goes back to him.

From what I've seen, the ring appears to be kind of an ass. It keeps playing the 'I am a center of profound wisdom, but I can't give a straight FUCKING ANSWER because then we would resolve the plot in five issues, not twenty-six.' It appears to be a profoundly terrible teacher, if it's goal is to teach Boston Brand responsibility and so forth. If the ring had just said 'No, it's not Batman. The chosen will come to you'...well, we wouldn't have had an issue or a White Lantern Batman with variant cover, right?

In fact, given how badly Brand has been screwed with by higher powers, I don't know why the ring is surprised that Brand wants to be rid of it.
