Amazing Spider-Man #649
Nov. 26th, 2010 05:17 pm
So many people were waiting to see the return of the original Hobgoblin, and Dan Slott certainly keeps his promises. Roderick Kingsley is back in town now that Norman Osborn's out of the picture.
Now working for the Kingpin, Hobgoblin decides to raid Norman's old warehouse for new equipment.

Hobby notices a cup of coffee and realizes someone is in there with him. It's none other than Phil Urich.

That's right folks. That Hobgoblin you were waiting to see return for over ten years? Well, Dan Slott kept his promise alright. He brought him back... just kill him off before the recap page and then replace him with Phil Urich.

Date: 2010-11-26 10:23 pm (UTC)It's comics. In ten years this will either be retconned, revealed to be a clone/evil doppleganger or other such twist.
Wonder if Slott will deal with any dangling Loners plot threads?

Date: 2010-11-26 10:32 pm (UTC)on the other hand, could've just let it be the gear and have Phil take up the Green Goblin name again just by seeing the safe house's stuff (there are exactly n +1 Goblin safehouses in NY, I gather) and then have both of them running around doing shit.
But I suppose it'll work out to something interesting enough in the long run.

Date: 2010-11-26 11:31 pm (UTC)Because Dan Slott hates you, that's why.
Doesn't feel quite right. Also, Dan Slott is a major continuity geek, which is the appeal of a LOT of his stories (especially in AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE). His stories often are done to APPEAL to comic book fans, not to aggravate them and/or metaphorically give them the middle finger.

Date: 2010-11-27 03:16 am (UTC)1.) This is Roderick Kingsley we're talking about here. The man loves using stand-in's, dupes, and robots. Note the fact that what does Phil do after this? He becomes the new Hobgoblin and takes up Rodrick's new job. That strikes me as slightly odd and almost reminds me of Lefty Donovan aka the first dupe Roddy sent out.
2.) This takes Roderick off the everyone's radar even more. Note this could even be a fake death #2 as he pulled before.
3.) Steve Wacker has been trolling original Hobgoblin fans at CBR baiting them (including myself) to go all rage on this. Either he's doing it because A.) twisting the dagger or B.) Roderick's alive and he'll show up at the end gaining the metal or whatever he really wants.

Date: 2010-11-27 06:42 am (UTC)Phil Urich is a good guy, dammit! Moreover, he's a good guy that most non-Spider-Girl fans have completely forgotten he ever existed. What earthly point is there in turning good ol' Phil into a psychopath out of nowhere? That's just plain STUPID, not to mention a terrible waste of a character.
Other posters have suggested that this is messing around with our heads, and that it's not really Phil. I hope that they're right, because otherwise, I will be PISSED.
