The book came out over a month ago and only the Wondergirl (Cassandra) story was posted as far as I could see so I'm posting a bit more from it since it had a bunch of stories inside.

Animal Man had a 12 page story in the book and I'll be posting 3 from it

Lyssa Drak had a story on her which was 6 pages and I'll be posting 2.

Animal Man's story begins on the start of Blackest Night with an army of extinct animals trying to kill Animal Man. He's doing well protecting his family but in an effort to battle them off tries tapping into the morphogenetic field of the extinct animals attacking him

The story then cuts to the JLA as it was assembled during Blackest Night with him and the other members getting possessed by Black Rings as they've died and been resurrected before.

Yeah, a pretty sick scene but well the Black Lanterns are attacking emotional ties so this one makes some sense.

The White Ring flies onto Buddy turning him into a White Lantern as he had in Blackest Night for all of a few panels and shows the most interesting bit of the story....

Panel 3 seems to be saying Animal Man is the Protector Deadman's searching for but I'm guessing this was more of an accident than anything. The last panel also seems to be a heavy tie in to the current stuff going on in Brightest Day and particularly Generation Lost. So here's hoping he shows up in Brightest Day soon.

Lyssa Drak during Blackest Night was caught into the Boo of Black by Scar and left there...

Lyssa's been having a bad time since then.

And Lyssa's been given a new lease on life, sorta.

Hoping she's used well, she was my favorite of the Sinestro Corps members shown thus far and of course the mystery about the shrouded figure continues.

The dramaturgic effect of Animal Man kneeling in the Black Lantern symbol was kind of ruined by the fact that I saw this first:

Just where does that originate, anyway? I've seen it all over the Net, but I've never been able to figure out where it comes from.

I quite like Lyssa Drak too, despite the fact that she's a villain. She just loves stories and books! She's one of the few villains you'd want to visit. In prison, so she couldn't kill you. :)

There is another? They're bringing Tefé into the DCU proper?

Okay, it's more likely that's referencing Vixen but... meh.

I've been wondering when they'd bring that up, considering the Red originated in Delano's woefully underrated and excellent(in its own way as good as Morrison's, but very different) run on AM. Because Buddy's been kind of a "flesh elemental" ever since then, though it appears they dropped that aspect altogether. But at that point, his powers pretty much were at least overlapping with Tefe's.

I wouldn't mind seeing Tefe return in the DCU. Personally I think the idea of having Vertigo separate from the DCU(as regards the company-owned stuff) outlived its usefulness because the DCU now is much more violent and "adult" than it was back then. Back then it was a way to avoid the embarrassment of the rest of that day's DCU from tainting those books. God knows I preferred it that way. Now? I think Vertigo should be fully DC's Epic, a place exclusively for creator-owned "Indy"ish stuff.

Of course, that's leaving aside the peculiar definition of "creator-owned" at DC, which is to say that it's yours once you can buy it back or till they stop reprinting it for a looong time. Marvel at least didn't used to pull that crap, even under Shooter, who made it VERY clear what was WFH and what wasn't.

4th page, 3rd panel. I had to look at that 3 times because initially I was thinking "Sooo..she doesn't wear..anything..down there..at all? She just..goes commando?"

I had to look at that 3 times before finally noticing that she is wearing something down there.

There was lots of that in BN. Particularly when James Robinson was involved. Remember the JLA issue that was mainly about Dr. Light being slowly stripped over the course of the book of clothes, dignity and sanity by Rapey Dr. Light? Probably the single most disgusting and indefensible section of the whole thing.

I really hope that Animal Man pops up in Brightest Day. And I think that he really might be the new protector that Deadman's supposed to be looking for.

Speaking of Brightest Day, is there finally a checklist part 3?

So every time Superman dies his cape always lands on a peice of jagged wood so that even in death it can wave dramatically.

Well, to be fair, I think what's being implied is that the Black Lantern ring is taking what would be quite normal and natural feelings and impulses - Buddy has a crush on a hot coworker; nothing unusual about that - and twists them into abhorrent and monstrous forms. I don't think he has a deep, unexpressed desire to rape her or anything - he's simply attracted to her. It's the ring coming up with the nasty stuff, not him.

I always like these stories that hint at the greater potential of Buddy's powers, which are potentially almost limitless. I mean, every form of life is technically an animal, so he could potentially go up to, say, Darkseid, copy HIS powers, and kick incredible amounts of ass.
Also - has Buddy's tongue ALWAYS been that long? That's... disturbing. I mean, it would be disturbing anyway, give the context, but it makes things even MORE disturbing.

I just read it and have to say: I love the stupidity of the Rainbow Raiders. Great way to deal with them, frankly.

As for the Buddy story: I'm no animal expert, but apparently neither is the artist. And I see at least one still-existing animal among the "extinct" and I'll bet someone could find many more. Who? The bison. Contrary to popular belief, they were only made severely endangered by us. They still exist, which one would know if they'd driven in the West and seen the farms where they raise them. No, seriously. Bison numbers in fact are up in recent years.

Easy mistake but still.

I think there are quite a few animals depicted that are actually extinct predecessors of current animals (most North American Ice Age giants... Mastodons (extinct relatives of elephants) and Woolly Rhinos, etc. (to go with the smallish T Rex head...); just as there are Australopithecines and other of the other predecessors to modern humans.
