Steel gets closure on his run-in with racial profiling and police brutality.

Steel and Amanda are searching for the dead-end street where the police officers attacked them (and stole his flight boots) two issues ago. They're completely unaware that those two officers are now dead, courtesy of Crash.

They eventually find the street in Elizabeth Township. Now that they know where the incident took place, they know which police station to hold accountable.

The two arrive at said station and explain the situation. The police are a little confused at John's statement that his flight boots were taken because he seems to be wearing them now. He explains that he's currently wearing his spare pair.

The police decide they need to detain the two for questioning.

Remember, it was John's brother Crash who killed the cops, which explains why Mrs. Gates would think he looks similar.

Amanda accuses him of killing the two officers, as revenge for hurting her.

At this point there's some sub-plot stuff involving Nat having a chance meeting with Superboy. No space for it here, unfortunately.

So the guy leaves and John opens the bag.

Aaaaand the camel's back just officially became broken. What follows is three whole pages of nothing but John smashing apart his kitchen and everything in it. Then he sits down on his now-overturned fridge and sips some tea. And on that cheery note, the issue ends.

I dunno, the cop at the end doesn't quite ring true, with his "We run a clean house... apart from the racist guy.. who I didn't know" and A) forgets there was a second cop there at the time, so it's not a one-off, and B) How many other officers are that he doesn't know and so can't speak for?

really everyone seems to forget there were two cops, except when they talk about the number dead. It's like the second one was a cardboard standee with a badge or something.

That's one of the things I love about this writing, actually. What that cop is giving us is how he feels about the situation. And yes, he's kinda massaged and tweaked and edited things to give himself a version of things that lets him sleep at night, because that's what people do. Just like he renders "bag of pieces" as "couldn't quite get them back together."

He's not, as far as he knows, lying or being a jerk, or being anything other than a good, honest cop in a tough spot. And yet Dr. Irons is still fully justified in getting ungodly pissed off, because that cop IS lying, IS being a jerk, and the entire situation stinks.

There's an old actor's proverb: "There are no small parts, only small actors." I have a very deep love for writing like Priest's, because he writes like that proverb says one should act. There are no small parts.

It's a bit late for that having shown two of them to be racist thugs already, no?

I've never read any Steel before, but this is telling me I should.

The DCU needs more irascible cigar-chomping female cops. Things are always improved by them somehow. Maggie Sawyer used to qualify, but not anymore.

Again I'm left kind of intrigued and kind of not sure, here. Two thoughts occur to me:

1) Man, they sure talk a LOT about his boots in this comic. Every post is boots Boots BOOTS BOOOOTS!!! :)

2) It seems like it was really trying to do something different with regards to the character and his cast. The writing is definitely skewing in interesting directions. What I do wonder is....did Steel actually fight any bad guys throughout this? I mean, other than putting up with corrupt cops, that is.
