Oh Brave and the Bold cartoon, is there nothing you can't do?

The latest episode of the Brave and the Bold Cartoon showcases more than just Batman and a partner, it showcases these might heroes... the truly brave, the genuinely bold...





And the outright fanboy geeky



Yup, it's THAT Justice League (as near as they can manage it)... Batman, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter are also on the team as more experienced mentors.

Fire, who has adopted her JL era outfit and Ice, who is... well, naive to the point of dangerous, introduce themselves



Booster is duly smitten, and Skeets helps him out with some mood lighting, and a little wind to ruffle that silky hair...





Yes, they went for the sparkly-teeth bit...

Fire and Ice are not particularly impressed.





Still, boys being boys,  Fire and Ice are shortly, again, the target of their team-mates attentions, and this time are a little... less, patient.











Fire can also assume her fire-form, much to J'onn's distress...



Let's just say that there are some of the personalities in this team, as one might surmise don't get on... EVER... Guy and Booster come to blows almost instantly, as Booster has snagged Hal's old room (Skeets confirms that Booster called "Firstsies") which Guy wanted as it has the GL symbol on the door.

The fight intensifies, leaving only Fire, ice and Beetle looking on aghast, Batman clearly wishing he was on another case, and Martian Manhunter floats above, until tragedy strikes...



Yes, J'onn has his SERIOUS cookie fixation here (of course)... and when he sees innocent chocolate chip cookies being tramped underfoot, well, it's more than an even a noble Martian can cope with...



In the midst of the resulting chaos, an alert comes in to the satellite, forces from Apokalips ("Home of the Parthenon", comments Ice confidently) are Boom-tubing in all over the planet.... and only the League can help... J'onn gives a rather impressively rousing speech to bring the team together... Seriously, it's rather magnificent...



The newly united League cheer as they answer the rallying cry....

Next scene is this...



"That SO did not go the way I was expecting", comments Jaime...

And what has happened to Boosters costume I hear you ask?

Well it's a shame to waste something so shiny and pretty, and it does make a cool standard... for the BAD GUYS...


I won't spoil the rest of the episode, but there's a nifty battle royale at the end...

And apropos of very little, I found these sketchcards over on comicartfans and thought they were fun... art by Kevin Maguire, colours by Joe Rubinstein...



And for legality, the cover of Booster Gold #32, where he's doing every EXCEPT the teeth sparkle....

I wasn't cancelled it just had its full run. Even the most succesfull cartoons these days don't run for more that 90 eps.

I loved this episode, while my poor hubby frowned and said "who ARE these people?" While sitting there working on my new green polka-dot vestments for ordinary time, I replied, "In a Pied Piper-less continuity, they're the best that we have against New Gods from Apokolips", which helped him not at all.

I'm torn on Ice. On one hand the accent felt off, and the Greek thing doesn't work with her (that joke almost feels like it was meant for a Rocket Red; I wonder if they swapped in Aquaman for Rocket Red during the writing project. Of course, this version of Aquaman fits in wonderfully with the JLI.)

On the other hand, she does come off as roughly as competent as the rest of the JLI, and this is her first speaking role in an animated series ever.

Her accent sounded vaguely Icelandish, which seemed fair enough, though I agree I wasn't sure her about her being THAT well, I don't want to say "dumb blonde" I really don't, but...

She seemed more like a cloudcuckoolander to me. Kind of like Zangief from the Street fighter move.

Ice is tricky to write; she should look naive compared to Fire/Guy, while in reality being more stable and balanced than both of them.

My problem with the Greek thing is that it's out of character for Ice to have a racist view of any nationality (and she is being racist, even if it's played for laughs in an "There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch," sort of way.)

I didn't see her as dumb or naive, just completely unfamiliar with Western Civilization. Personally, the uncertain ingenue gets a straight shot into my heart, especially Tora and early Sue Storm, a little bit less for Mary Marvel, Meggan, and Doug Ramsey.

For the Scandinavians vs. the Greeks thing, I thought it was pretty obviously about religion: Odin and Zeus (and I'd throw in Ra as the third power block) have been competing for thousands of years. Love that stuff.

I acknowledge fully that these opinions are very strange and likely only my own.

I haven't watched the episode, but from reading icon_uk's recap, my impression is that the joke is that Ice is getting "Apokalips" mixed up with "Acropolis." Because they sound similar.

That was definitely my impression. Ice was too "blonde" to know any better. (the episode drives this home by having the soundtrack come to a distinct pause at her comments, highlighting her cluelessness)

It was definitely not a racist comment, whatsoever.

It seemed to me that Bea and Tora had their accents ramped up. Loved how "the most evil people in the universe" are the Greeks to Tora. Good thing Diana wasn't around. Bea's hair is so long she has to move it to sit down. Ok, Guy, if at first you don't succeed...

But, just like the cookies were chocolate chip instead of chocolate sandwich with creamy filling, ... different universe. Still, I wish we could have a whole season of these.

Yeah, that was awesome, what would usually be the sort of season finale "Let's unite our fantastic powers into pure concentrated badassery for justice" is casually swept aside without even a comment.

I'm surprised since this is now the staple of female heroines in the DC universe now. After all, seeing Miss Martian, the ONLY female member of the show so far appear out of nowhere in Young Justice being reduced to nothing more than an ogling gag isn't doing the girls of DC any services.

So, you missed the part where Black Canary is explicitly stated to be Young Justice's combat trainer, then? Granted, also a last minute presence, but give it a little time.

Not that the ogling thing isn't annoying in Brave and the Bold, but there's no reason to drag Young Justice into this. Teenage boys get excited when meeting teenage girls, particularly adorable ones like Miss Martian.

Yep. Instead of doing the "What? You think this was going to be an all boys club?" that would have been respectable, we get a "Oh! I'm in an all boys club!" that paints the image of what her role really is. The love interest and nothing more. Why else would she be put on the team at the end out of sheer randomness with no character backstory, development or anything to remotely justify why she's there at all?

Just a comment on the art, but I know they purposely made Batman look more 'classic' (aka blue costume, slightly pudgier look) so he looks closer to the original TV series look, and also a little old-school animation. But the other characters, like Booster Gold, they look like too sleek refined, like they came straight out of Justice League animated and BTAS. Just a little art discordance.

One of the things I most loved about this show was Aquaman. Finally, an Aquaman that makes sense as a serious threat--even if he is a thinly disguised Hercules-with additional powers that are tossed in as time goes by. Still, great character.

I actually had a few people ask me if I'd seen it, but I don't have Cartoon Network! I managed to find a way, and I was so giddy. It was a great episode.

It's worth watching again to see if you can figure out what was going on during the rest of the episode; anytime a Parademon acts a bit weird it's probably him. (And at least one Parademon is definitely him; the one that stays in the Boom Tube generator and looks puzzled about the controls when Batman is ambushed.)
