Hello [community profile] scans_daily, and welcome to Day 7 of our 30 Days of Winter series. Today's theme is Young Adult Comics!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

RUNAWAYS!

So much love for the original series. My university actually had the first Runways digest as part of the curriculum for a Young Adult Fiction class, but I wasn't lucky enough to take it! Later runs could never quite capture the magic of the BKV/Alphona team, but here's hoping for a revival soon. And fingers crossed that the movie will rock.

So, S_D, what's your favorite young adult comic?

Stay tuned for tomorrow's theme: ROMANCE!

And our full 30 Days of Winter calendar is here.

I feel a little guilty that Runaways is the only one I'm really familiar with, but ohhh Runaways, how I love you!

Actually, come to think of it, Rapunzel's Revenge, written by Shannon and Dean Hale, and with art by Nathan Hale, prolly counts! It's a delightful retelling of the fairy tale with Rapunzel cast in a more heroic role. The western/steampunk/fantasy setting is an added bonus!

Oh, please do! It was only after seeing the post about it on s_d1.0 (was that you? i cannot remember who it was, but i'm forever grateful to them!) that it came to my attention, so someone who isn't me definitely needs to show it off again!

It seems likely that you did!

If I do post it will probably be my first camera post. That does not strike me as a book that will get along well with a scanner.

Yes, "Rapunzel's Revenge"! One of those books that I heard about it here, forgot about it, and then found it in the library!

Does Beasts of Burden count as Young Adult? Because Beasts of Burden is fantastic.

Beasts of Burden is one of those comics (along with Age of Reptiles) that I'd love to be able to count as YA, but there are a couple of scenes of intense gore in each that make me uncomfortable with doing so without reservation.

Well, I'm not really the best judge for that. It really depends on how young you consider "Young Adult" - I read Sandman before high school and Watchmen in high school. Maybe should have waited a couple of years for Sandman, but Beasts of Burden should be fine. I think. Maybe.

Wasn't it nominated for an Eisner for Young Adult? (Or some other comic award, I seem to remember)

I know we just has Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane a couple of posts back but it is my absolute favourite and demands double-recognition.

I think it'll have to go to Scott McCloud's Zot! It's not only my favorite young adult comic, but one of my favorites overall. I've only read the Black & White Collection, but it's my go to book when introducing teenagers into comics. I've had a large number of (at the time) fellow high school students who previously had never opened a comic book tell me how much the book affected them, sometimes to the point of tears.

Even though it is very much from the eighties, I think it still can resonate with a lot of young adults today. (Or at least it resonated with me.) The writing can be cliche at times, not going to lie, but it has its moments of absolute brilliance (particularly in the "Earth Stories"). The art, especially Scott McCloud's humans, can be unpolished. On the other hand, his landscapes and cityscapes are beautiful.

Okay, that ended up being a much longer comment than I had expected. My point is, basically, that Zot! is very much a comic book (like the amazing Runaways) as cliche as it sounds, about growing up. Not only in the sense that it's a young adult series, but in a way it's also the author and medium itself that are growing up, or at least trying to. I was actually thinking about making a post about the series since I've never seen it on Scans Daily, but I don't think I have posting privileges yet. If anyone's interested in some more rambling about the comic or want to see some scans, let me know 'cause I don't think I'd have time to post if for the 30 days meme. (Or if someone else wants to make a post about it, that'd be awesome too!)

Seconding the Courtney Crumrin love. I'd post some scans of it except I'm not sure where my collection is at the moment.

Thirding! I wish it would continue. The last volume ended on such a "Wait, but what happens next?!" note.

Runaways, "Rapunzel's Revenge," "Electric Girl," "kimmie66," "Plain Jane," "DramaCon" (which also falls under the manga category...)! I'm so lucky, my library has a great graphic novel collection.

Runaways would be my first choice too.

But my second choice would probably be the "New X-Men: Academy X/Childhood's End" series..

Not everyone made it through to the very end, but at least you know that those who did really did earn their new titles as X-Men.

I guess I'll have to go with 'Bone'. It's brilliant stuff, because there's something for pretty much everybody - there's high adventure, romance, tragedy, fantasy, horror, cute stuff, mature stuff, and great heaping gobs of hilariousness - and all in a form that is perfectly suitable for all but the very youngest readers. It's like Harry Potter - it gets more mature and involved as it goes along, so a kid can grow up with the series.
Also, I would LIKE to add 'Rapunzel's Revenge', as I keep hearing it's great stuff, but I've never actually read it, only flipped through it when I got a copy for a friend. Having just seen 'Tangled', I may give it a look at some point, though - it seems to me that there may be some similarities in how the two works treat the 'Rapunzel' story.
