That was MY thought actually - they take him to the Watchtower and use wonderwomans purple ray of magic on him, or something. Not the cape.

Dear lord, that art's ugly. I don't remember who said it first or where I first heard it quoted, but there's an old comic book adage that every line you draw on a persons face adds to their perceived age. I don't always agree with the sentiment, but it's a good guideline. And dear lord, the people in the first panel look like undead mummies.

I have to concur.

Yeah, I saw that too and did a double-take. You would think that Clark, being a reporter, would be more PC, but there you go. It was a great speech until that bit...well, and the "tear to my eye" bit. This kind of cliched speech is why Lois is a Pulitzer-winning journalist and you aren't Clark...

"They're making a movie about him."

Hmm... Superhero movies must be a real pain to write in the actual universe where the Superhero lives - you wouldn't know the backstory/origin of most of them, so you'd essentially have to make it all up. So the Green Lantern movie in the DC Universe would be about some guy called Buck Stardodger, and how he received his ring from a mystical chimpanzee while holidaying in Tibet (or something).

That, and if you use an existing villain in the movie script you might have to contend with them showing up at your doorstep to voice their displeasure.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the DCU civillians know about the corps by now, what with the multiple GLs and the entire GLC dropping by once or twice, such as the Sinestro corps wars or Blackest night. Add that to the fact that Guy and John's identities being public, and GL would probably be one of the few in-universe movies they could get mostly right.

[personal profile] karunya 2010-12-10 18:47 (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I did *NOT* want to get into this morass right here. In fact, I'm just writing to say that I have no idea what to say! (Of course, this hasn't stopped me thus far.)

I fit into several of the categories which Superman idolizes (a verb that I chose very carefully): retired EMT, military family, living with chonic illness. I even won a lifesaving award when I was a Girl Scout for rescuing my infant cousin when she attempted to ingest broken glass, permanently damaging the nerves in my right hand.

I sooooo do not feel like a hero, though I downright idealize those who have served before me and beside me. I'm the first one to leap straight into glurge when asked to do a eulogy for a fallen responder. I'm the go-to girl for police dog funerals around here.

And as a clergy member serving sick, elderly, and forgotten people, I struggle every day with the issue of theodicy: why God allows evil.

Having said all that, I'm kinda glad that Supes mentioned the generic Supreme Being of American civil religion. I'm working on my doctoral thesis on the influence of the whole "Fatherhood of God and brotherhood of man" idea in Silver Age comics. (The master's degree came after a long digression into how the decline of Anglican religion and increase in ethnic diversity in 1980s Britain were demonstrated in British science fiction.)

To this day, a US president or any other official figure can still get away with a generic God reference. (Though I was amused to discover after a recent court appearance that unlike many current TV shows, the bailiff did not brandish a Bible or ask me to invoke the help of the Almighty.)

This God reference was too well-integrated in the speech to have slipped out of Kal's mouth automatically. He's given so many speeches throughout the decades, and lived through the increasing secularization of American society (of which I am totally in favor, by the way). Notice that he pointedly neither mentioned Rao, nor the Jesus to whom he was doubtlessly exposed during his Midwestern childhood.

It's quintessentially American to invoke a generic God Who stretches to fit almost any definition of divinity. From the 1950s civil religion of "Protestant/Catholic/Jew" to the Masons' Great Architect, from the God in whom our coins trust (if not ourselves) to "The Man Upstairs", Superman was just the latest public figure to use the God-cipher of American civil religion.

Hopefully (and yes, I have a bias in this argument, duh!), it's a forgivable weakness for the Man of Steel.

It is always an interesting thing to see different authors try their hand at pegging Superman's religious outlook and beliefs, but dang what a dense work of needles that must be?

Skimming through the superhero's religion fansite, it usually seems more often than not, writers like to associate "personality" traits to worshipers and if the character fits in that stereotype mold, then that's the religion they can write them in.

With a character like Supes, it's really interesting to see the different ways people interpret his mind-set about his place in the world (this is more Bronze and Modern Age writing I'm talking about here). Sometimes he acts like he has a "special role" protecting this little blue ball, other times he says, "I'm just one of many, doing what I can."

The crazy thing is when people stop and think about the actual elements of the DCU heaven and hell that the superheroes have come in contact with. Hard to listen to clergy when you've got first-hand contradictory knowledge (like angel Zauriel telling a Catholic nun that, no actually, God is sexless, so calling God 'He' is just a bit silly. She punched him and threw him out the front door.)

And also, thanks for your service and work. Much appreciated.
