I thoufght, THOUGHT, this would be an amazing step in Spider-man's new direction. Hobgoblins back, Gargan isgetting pimped into a super scorpion, and I actually like the art.

But no, I get crap like this from Slott of all people, and I loved his Mighty Avengers work. This is disappointing.

As for the whole Carlie thing, my two cents. She has no character. Literally. She is a mary sue, in it's worse form. she's there, perfect and better than mj....but we don't know why. It's poor styory and instead of branching her out with flaws and emotion we get (Insert critic's rantings here) from this (Explicit)

I skipped over the Carlie stuff. It takes some practice, but if you learn to focus your mind you will see that she is just an empty place holder. AS i read these pages every character has a "voice" I can picture in my head. Except her... nothing that resonates as a person.

Hobgolblin's flying camera had more character with one ping and one page.

This is from MJ's point of view, isn't it? MJ isn't a scientist, so of course she wouldn't know what they're talking about. That would be true even if they were still married.

If recent issues are anything to go by, Dan Slott (not Joe Q, Joe Q isn't writing this) is emphasizing that Mary-Jane is still a big part of Peter's life, even if they're no longer involved romantically, which is world's better then pretending she doesn't exist.

I'd be willing to accept this, but as others have said, Amazing has the really bad habit of acting as though Carlie is the magical self insert girl of Peter's dreams so it really kinda seems like this is more "yo guys carlie's pretty cool soooo"stuff.

I think it's entirely possible that this is more of a way to emphasize carlie rather than denigrate MJ, though it does have a side effect of doing so,but it does come off as pretty annoying to me.

To copy and paste what I said elsewhere, my initial observations to these panels:

1. So Carlie, thanks to Humerto Ramos, has a different hairstyle yet AGAIN, and in the space of an issue no less. Looks like Marvel is STILL having problems trying to find a distinctive look for her to make her stand beyond the "glasses wearing nerd girl." (Course, it also doesn't help there's ANOTHER glasses wearing nerd girl by the name of Bella Fishbach in this issue who also appears to be set-up as a possible love interest.)

2. If the attempt by Slott was to show how much of a "better" girlfriend Carlie makes for Peter because she can talk highly-advanced scientific subjects with him that are way above Mary Jane's head, then it really doesn't work. Not only because it makes Carlie come across as even more of a Mary Sue than she already is, but also because it winds up making Peter and Carlie, as a couple, seem like a pair of insufferable bores (then again, maybe that's part of the gag). Heck, the fact that Mary Jane is even in the scene at all and that we get a reminder of her and Peter's shared history together (via MJ's verbal slip-up about them once upon a time living at Stark Tower) ends up showing that Peter has more genuine chemistry with the woman who is supposed to be his "ex" than he does with his current girlfriend whom he supposedly has more in common with.

3. That image of the Black Cat would be a lot sexier if it didn't have her pet cats drinking from the same milk that she's bathing in. I mean, aren't baths supposed to be...you know...sanitary?

I can see it all now, carlie bitching, Peter still believing it's all great. Mary Jane, who quite frankly has no real anger towards Pete Carlies maid of honor because her 1st pic got sick. Harry Osborn is the best man, who curses spider-man for is father's aand his own screw ups, and finally they kiss and wed. 	What makes it hard for me to read this (out of context) in a way that's meant as benign toward MJ is that, while it's supposed to represent MJ's perspective, it's also referring to MJ in the third person. I'm going to go ahead and play Devil's Advocate for these two bits.

MJ/Peter/Carlie -- Like others have said, this isn't the first time in Spider-Man history where MJ's been completely lost while Peter was talking Science in front of her. Plus, literally the next panel has MJ throwing it right back by telling them that he has to go and meet "legendary fashion design that Peter and Carlie have never heard of."

And yes, Carlie was really shoved down our throats during the "BND era," but this feels different to me. So far she's at least been consistent in personality--unlike before where she was said to be so much purer and yet acted very petty--and hell, homeboy's had three issues worth of building her up, and so far he's done more with the character by saying she's gotten into roller derby than she's gotten the past three years.

Black Cat -- On it's own, yes, that panel is very fan-service-y and strange. But, the panel before it does give subtext--Peter's on the phone, talking to her, she mentions she's taking a bath, he jokingly says something about most cats using their tongues to clean themselves, and Cat chastises Peter by saying that she isn't just some weird cliche'. This makes it more than just simple fan-service to me--like they're making her as this inherently sexy femme fatale, but an eccentric one.

Again, just playing Devil's Advocate--in the end I would rather just have Peter/MJ stick, but there was some context taken out for this, I feel.

	Everybody saying that she's bathing in milk is weird, it isn't really. Milk contains natural acid that's good for the skin. Try it on a break out sometime. I'm not reading any Spider books, and all I know about the current status quo is what I read here. But I'm going to venture out on a limb and say I'm suspecting Carlie is in line for a major league fridging some time in the future.

Obviously, she's being pushed in the books as Peter's One True Love, a status previously held by Gwen Stacy. Editorial clearly believes that, seeing how Peter was handled in House of M. So Carlie is being set upon that pedestal, and the long fall associated with it.

Another fact that keeps nagging at me is Norman Osborne. Ever since he got elevated to head of the Thunderbolts he's been out of the loop of the Spider books for the most part. Now that he's been brought low after Siege, I suspect he's likely to be playing Spider-Man's arch-nemesis once again.

The fact that Norman is crazy is also a major factor. Considering that a lot of times in these reality altering stories, it's often the people who are not fully in command of their faculties that can perceive when things are wrong. He hasn't been directly involved in all of the changes in Spidey's life, especially OMD. His grip on sanity can be tenuous, and if what he knows about Spider-Man does not jive with current continuity,that won't be good for Peter.

So lets follow tradition and take it out on the girlfriend! Overall from what I've read here it does feel like Carlie exists solely to become a source for more Spider-angst later on down the line.
