I might be posting more later, but until then, here are two panels from the latest issue of ASM.

I'll just let the fail speak for itself here.

(To clarify, the exchange is from MJ's POV. It's to show stupid she is in comparison to Carlie, who "gets" Peter)

Well, the panel directly after this one has Mary Jane give them a look as she says: "That's...fascinating. But I need to get back to the studio. We got (fashion celebrity Pete and Carlie have never heard of) dropping by the show today." And then she takes off while Peter says he'll DVR the program.

Of course, the scene also is set-up so that Peter is very nervous, not just due to the fact that his ex and his current girlfriend are both hanging out with him during lunch, but that MJ knows he's Spider-Man while Carlie doesn't and he's afraid his secret is going to be blown when he and MJ end up talking about how they used to live at Stark Tower when he worked for Tony Stark.

Making a point that MJ doesn't get Peter and Carlie's talk is more specifically about the romantic relationships.

MJ's secret code response comes off as resentful. Part of how the Bad Shipper gets rid of Former Love Interest.

(And MJ would be TOTALLY jealous of Spidey/DD! Because they were made for each other! And she would realize that Peter never really loved her as much he now loves Matt!! ::slaver::)

Right. Slott is clearly trying to show that because Peter can relate to Carlie on a scientific level that they have more in common and is therefore more "suitable" for Peter. But even so, what the scene winds up doing instead is make Peter and Carlie come across like a pair of insufferable bores, and the fact that Peter and MJ's prior relationship and her knowing he's Spider-Man is acknowledged ends up proving Peter and MJ are the one's who still have the real chemistry in spite of it.

That was definitely my impression, in that MJ quickly got the feeling she's was a third wheel. But I would say this actually makes Peter and Carlie end up looking worse, as a couple, because of it.
