Are you ready for an action sequence?
Couldn't hear you.
That's better.
Here are 15 pages from the 107 of Tower of Treasure, the first volume of a book series called Three Thieves. The creator is Scott Chantler, best known for his epic of Canadian history, Northwest Passage. The publisher is Kids Can Press, a Toronto-based children's press. I'm posting mostly in spreads because I like how Chantler handles page turns.
The heroine is Dessa, a fourteen-year-old acrobat with a small traveling show. She does a tightrope act while a little blue juggler named Topper picks pockets. The show also has a strongman, a big one-headed lavender guy named Fisk. (Apparently other Ettins like him aren't one-headed.) The three of them try to rob the queen's treasure tower, and nearly get away. But don't.
Dessa recognizes the queen's wise man Greyfalcon as the man who kidnapped her brother years before. So once Topper gets them out of their cell, she decides not to join her comrades in sneaking out of the tower. Even though the gallows are being prepared outside, she's going to investigate Greyfalcon. Because now it's personal.

Tightrope walker, remember?

And Dessa still has to get out of the gated city.
That's Tower of Treasure, Book 1 of the Three Thieves saga.
(As a postscript, I must say I'm annoyed I didn't get the memo that the second volume of Castle Waiting is out.)

Date: 2010-12-21 08:34 pm (UTC)Glad you enjoyed the book, and this scene in particular. It's one of my favourites, too, a throwback to the type of rambunctious swashbuckling chase scenes I love from the silent film era (like Douglas Fairbanks's MARK OF ZORRO).
Thanks, too, for linking to someplace people can buy the book. I'm perfectly cool with online sharing of this type so long as this simple consideration is granted.
Anyone who wants to know more about the book, or my work in general, can find me online at: www.scottchantler.com. Come visit me, and leave comments!
