My last Locke & Key post ended near the climax of the first TPB. So instead of spoiling the ending, let's skip ahead to some scene early in the second "season" of Locke & Key.

It all starts with Bode finding another magic key. But this one is different. It doesn't seem to open any door...

They freak out (Ty most of all) and their mom comes in asking what's with the racket?

Like stick books in their heads. Turns out doing so allows them the book's every word (though understanding doesn't come automatically). Ty decides to use this to catch up on some schoolwork.

Later on, they show off the key to their new friend, Zack.

BESTEST PLAN. NOTHING BAD CAN COME OF THIS.

Now THAT is nifty. I'm not sure I'd want other people to know what the inside of my head looks like, but I'd like to take a look myself. (And some of the creepy stuff in the corners aside, it looks like Bode's head is a pretty nifty place to be.)
I love how the mom is like 'hmm? Oh, that. Yeah, kinda freaky. Damn the fishsticks.' Clearly, she's seen this before.

I dunno...

I think it's part of the spell; for some reason, didn't you notice that the spectre in the house wants to influence the kids, but not the mother or any of the other adults?

I don't think it's something the Mom sees before; for some reason, I think the supernatural forces at work here can only and/or wants to influence all the children (particularly this family). For the adults, the magic makes them either disbelieve it or act lethargic to it.

And trust me, as much as I'd love to look and find unexplored regions of my brain, the thought of my nightmares coming out, being real and possibly escaping (yeah, a glass soda bottle; totally unbreakable[/sarcasm]) makes me more than willing to get the hell away from that key.

"Nifty"? Perhaps. God Freakin' "can be abused and will end up causing a bigger mess that measures up to catastrophic proportions"? The fact that they can't suspect this makes me want to hold a big sign to their faces saying "ARE YOU THAT DENSE?!"

Nah. The mom's actually just drunk all of the time and is incapable of handling anything more than just living day to day. Losing a husband does that to you, I bet.

Ah, I see.

To be fair, that'd make anyone get drunk all the time.

Although the Mom has her moments too; she impressed me with her "Mama Bear" bit when she bought the gun the instant she was informed that her husband's killer got loose and said that she wouldn't hesitate to kill him if her dared showed up.

I'm not sure the two are mutally exclusive.

Oh, I'm not saying that there aren't some potentially horrifying consequences to poking around inside your own head - I know I have some nightmares that I NEVER want released, thank you very much - just that the concept itself is nifty, and I doubt I could resist at least taking a peek. Anyway, Bode's evidently looked into his own head without anything nasty escaping. I don't think it's so much the actual opening up that causes the problem so much as it's the 'reaching in and pulling things out' part. As long as you take proper precautions, all's fine.
And I was guessing that the mom had seen such things before because this was the old family house and she'd been there on previous occasions.

This is really good. I'm kind of annoyed I never heard of it before.

The author of this (Joe Hill) has written some great books as well.

1. Heart-Shaped Box
2. 20th Century Ghosts
3. Horns

Neat, by coincidence, I picked up "Heart Shaped Box" in a second hand shop for my next long train journey!

So the key basically turns you into a cross between The Numskulls and a Grant Morrison Doom Patrol plot.... Neat! :)
