In a little more than twenty-four hours from now, it'll be a year.

And just like that, a lot of things'll be one Gregorian year closer.

Previews and solicits'll be called to account by the actuals, and there's a lot of both; in the case of the former, it's captivating reading if you've got some spare time.

Iron Man, though not Invincible now; there's ideas like Detroit Steel's legion of mobile controlled drone bombers and #500's " What if amnesia was a weapon? ", but they're not really getting me.

The other stuff is, though:

IRON MAN/THOR #3 (of 4)
Penciled by SCOT EATON
As the High Evolutionary puts in place the finishing touches of his chilling scheme to change the face of the planet, Iron Man and Thor find themselves side by side battling the potent and unexpected characters that the evolutionary mastermind has lured to his cause. But can the Golden Avenger and the God of Thunder ever defeat a threat that seeks to rewrite both the divine heritage of Asgard and the proud legacy of science? Worlds will change and nothing, not even the gods, will remain the same.

(That Dynamo must feel so outclassed.)

It's got what's essentially an attempt to create a god of magitech and the villains literally hiding in a book; how can't I like it?

January's got Rapture wrapping up too, plus Legacy's Pride arc nearing its end (and so too Legacy as a whole?)

Before their children, the RUNAWAYS, became their greatest nemeses, the villainous PRIDE of Los Angeles faced their greatest threat when a destitute and penniless TONY STARK came to Los Angeles. Through cat's-paws both super powered and mundane they tried to break him, but every attempt failed. But now they've made a mistake by kidnapping the person closest to him and sacrificing her to their dark masters, THE GIBBORIM. Tony will do everything to get her back, including attacking The Pride on their own turf ... with some surprise guest-stars in tow!!!

(The covers're half the draw of this arc, I don't know why.)

Surprise guest-stars, eh? Wonder how Van Lente'll keep to the letter of this solicit; he's certainly managed it with his previous ones well enough.

Amongst the vengeance of Spider-Slayers and Starros, there's also another January one that I'll be looking out for:

Great loves and horrifying enemies return in the battle royale for the souls of the Hulks -- and the life of every mortal on Planet Earth! The Hulk faces his darkest demons -- literally! -- all hell breaks loose -- literally! -- and there'll be the devil to pay -- literally! And if you thought the Hulk's battles with his sons were personal, you ain't seen nothing yet.

The Hulk and friends versus a Zom'd Strange, chaos spawn, the dead, and Brian Banner as the Guilt Hulk? How can't this be fun?

(There's also #621's "GOD SMASH!", but I keep mentally retitling it "Whom the Hulk would smash..!")

Over on the DC side, there's JLA/99 giving Firestorm surely temporary new voices in his head, Tim Drake as Unternet bogeyman, and Weird Worlds:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Welcome to one of the weirdest titles DC has ever assembled – 6 issues filled with stories of monsters, ghouls and far-out cosmic craziness!
Each month, you’ll be treated to new 10-page chapters in three exciting serials. In this debut issue, Kevin Van Hook and Jerry Ordway bring you the continuing adventures of Lobo, everyone’s favorite Czarnian (after all, he’s the only one left, so he’d better be your favorite). Aaron Lopresti introduces you to his newest creation, the kind-hearted monster called Garbageman. And Kevin Maguire takes you to the farthest reaches of outer space with the introduction of a hero called Tanga!
Wrap it all up in a cover by the amazing Justiniano, and you’ve got a truly monstrous hit on your hands! These artists are letting their freak flags fly – join them, why don’t you?

Probably gonna wait this one's reception out, but it sounds interesting nonetheless; we're at least guaranteed Lobo visiting the appropriate response on someone who thinks he's felled him.

Dark Horse's got some interesting stuff too, like more translated alt-universe Evangelion (and what alternates they are), Darth Vader leading a fleet into a shadowy nebula, and an origin I didn't expect to see:

Mac Walters (W), John Jackson Miller (W), Omar Francia (A), Michael Atiyeh (C), Massimo Carnevale (Cover), and Joe Quinones (Cover)
Mass Effect 2 Lead Writer Mac Walters reveals the origin of our galaxy’s most mysterious powerbroker—The Illusive Man!

With co-writer John Jackson Miller (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) and artist Omar Francia (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2), Walters chronicles humanity’s first deadly days on the galactic stage and uncovers the pivotal role The Illusive Man played in it all! Available only in comics, this essential piece of Mass Effect canon offers new insights for existing fans, while the focus on humanity’s first steps into the wider Mass Effect universe provides a riveting story of action and intrigue for sci-fi readers of all stripes!

Not sure what got me more, this or DC's Driver oneshot (..well, I guess that makes sense; still wondering about Wildstorm's Nier mini, though.)

There's more in the first quarter of 2011 than Thunderstrike's potential terrible hair and a Little Endless birthday party; there's Iron Man in February, with Invincible's new direction, Iron Man/Thor and Legacy's conclusion (plus Carnage, I guess,) and..

IRON MAN 2.0 #1
Penciled by BARRY KITSON
Spinning directly out of INVINCIBLE IRON MAN! New mission! New armor! New Iron Man! Lt. Col. James Rhodes is War Machine, the single most advanced one-man weapon of conventional combat. But wars aren't fought the way they used to be - and when Rhodey has to face a mysterious enemy he can't shoot, can't bomb, can't even see, he's going to be forced to evolve or die. Find out why War Machine becomes Iron Man 2.0 in the 3-part launch arc of this all-new ongoing series! By breakout sensation Nick Spencer (Morning Glories, Action Comics) and the legendary Barry Kitson (INCREDIBLE HULKS, THE ORDER)!

.. okay, the only thing that's got me is that it's being treated as War Machine v3 by everyone, creator included.

There's also a surprising amount of Young Allies crossovers this month, each with some interesting hooks, like Death Game:

Written by PAUL TOBIN
When the strange and deadly Arcade decides to rebuild his ruined reputation, he sets his sights on the members of the Avengers Academy and the Young Allies. But when one of his teenage victims escapes, is it a setback for Arcade, or all part of his master plan to turn the entirety of New York into...Murderworld? DEATH GAME starts here!

and the long-awaited-by-somebody-I'm-sure Onslaught Unleashed:

Variant Covers by ROB LIEFELD

Deep in the heart of Colombia, an immense and unmarked engine hums at a steady, ominous pace. Its purpose: to exploit a tear in the barrier between this world and another; to harvest and refine an exotic energy source for Roxxon Energy Corp. But just on the other side of that tear, inside the Negative Zone, a dark entity of vast power has been waiting for what has seemed like centuries, preparing for the moment when he can finally reach through the tear and once again cast his judgment on humans and mutants alike. For the psychomagnetic abomination called ONSLAUGHT, that moment is about to arrive...and he'll have the girl without a world--NOMAD--to thank for it! Eisner winner Sean McKeever and Filipe Andrade (X-23) team to bring you to the heart of terror and the edge of sanity in this hotly-anticipated epic!

(She laid Moon Knight out on an end table, how tidy!)

New York rigged up as one giant deathtrap? Two teams with two very different outlooks taking on a threat that probably outpowers most of them? Should be fun.

And a very interesting backup for the current F4's final issue:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Following the death of XXXXXXXX, we spend a month seeing how the remaining members of the Fantastic Four, the extended family, other heroes, and prominent villains react to the loss of this legendary hero. It's the epilogue to THREE: A Month of Mourning. PLUS: The Amazing Spider-Man consoles Franklin Richards in a second all-new tale!

All jokes about Spidey and loss aside, him talking to Franklin about loss might well be a good story; probably won't have to trot out lines about Uncle Bens, hopefully.

There's also 7 Billion Needles's 3rd volume (now the two opposed aliens are living in the heroine's body), JLA's darkness arc, Ultimate Reed being evil, Haunt's protagonist meeting his evil counterpart, and another MA retaking:

Bad enough Captain America is a hero from the 1940s trapped in today’s he’s a FUGITIVE trapped in the 30th century! Can the mysterious Korvac figure out a way to get Cap back home, or is the Star-Spangled Avenger forever on the run from a future gone mad!?

Different indeed; interviews've set most of the conflict up as Korvac and Cap talking at each other, and the first issue's born that out (the second'll be Cap versus the future Guardians of the Galaxy. And the fourth'll feature Galactus.)

Going into March, there's an Invincible issue that'll finally get me.. see, #501 promises to ask "Why should Tony Stark be so damn proprietary with EVERYTHING?"

#502 gives us an asker:

Doc Ock could do a lot with those biology-rewriting enhanciles.

RUSE #1 (of 4)
Written by Mark Waid
Renowned as the Victorian world's greatest detective, Simon Archard is the most intelligent of men. But when he crosses paths with the mysterious and enchanting Emma Bishop, has the smartest man in the world met his equal? Brought to readers by superstar writer Mark Waid (Amazing Spider-Man) and red-hot artist Mirco Pierfederici (Tron: Original Movie Adaptation), this is the new comic series that’ll leave you breathless.

Should be fun.

(Simon Archard usually is, whether it's him trying to rationally explain demonstrated psychic phenomena to a psychic or raging at his magic companion saving him.)

And something that, I suppose, had to happen.. but might actually be interesting:

They were the Squadron Supreme, heroes exiled from another dimension to our own...but the twisted science of the Project Pegasus facility infected these defenders with a virulent zombie strain. Now it’s up to Jill Harper’s desperate special ops team to keep the plague contained within the facility—whatever the cost. But Harper discovers that the Squadron wasn’t the only unconscionable experiment being kept off the Pegasus records...and her shocking find may be the key to saving the human race. Join Frank Marrafino (Haunted Tank) and Fernando Blanco (MARVEL ZOMBIES 5, THUNDERBOLTS) as the bodies and unpredictable resurrections climax in the most gore-soaked chapter of the Marvel Zombies saga yet!

(Oh, SWORD'll enjoy this.. this Hyperion's probably another 'Patient Zero' Sentry in the making.)

Just guess who they're trying to evoke. It is a shock, is it not?

And speaking of Hyperions, there's a Thunderbolts roster addition more surprising than him:

Issue #155 Captain America 70th Anniversary Variant Cover by GERALD PAREL
Before he was pressed into service for the Thunderbolts, the mysterious swamp monster of the team knew another life: as guardian for a force of nature called The Nexus of Realities. An old friend of the creature does remember this--and breaks the silent one out of The Raft to return to duty at the borders of our world. What danger awaits the Man-Thing--and what will The Thunderbolts say to losing their favorite plant? The team is back in action after word has come down on high about a weakness in Thunderbolt’s, and they must bolster their ranks to deal with the imminent magical threats. Luke Cage calls on New Avenger DOCTOR STRANGE to help find the perfect candidate to fill the role, but bringing this person in is far from easy--which is why SATANA will make a fine Thunderbolt. Back at The Raft, the status quo is changing to an even greater extent without Luke's knowledge. Get ready for new levels of lightning-like justice!

Hyperion's time on the roster is probably numbered, then, if #152/#153's talks of unstable new additions and Juggernaut fights're any indications.

(now I'm not sure what sounds more interesting, potential interactions between him and Moonstone or potential Satana/Moonstone interactions?)

Speaking of surprising characters, JLA's got it on the other side as storylines and crossovers come together:

1:10 Variant cover by DAVID MACK
“The Rise of Eclipso” continues! With the Spectre fallen and darkness spread throughout the DC Universe, no one is safe from Eclipso’s control! Not any of DCs shadow-based heroes and villains. Not Alan Scott and the magical beings of the moon’s Emerald City. Not even the World’s Greatest Heroes! And when Eclipso’s ultimate goal is revealed, they’ll see that it’s scale is even bigger than the DC Universe. One lone hero has the power to make sure all be well however...for he has hope. Introducing Blue Lantern Saint Walker to the Justice League of America! In the remains of New Krypton, Doomsday tears through Batman, Supergirl and Alpha Lantern Boodikka in his search for Cyborg Superman as “Reign of Doomsday” rampages on!

wow, two/three storylines colliding. At least there's Robinson's promise of a Saint Walker/Jade dynamic.. and Dark Supergirl (thanks, Omega Man!) sticking around till the next JLA annual.

(wonder how that'll square with her ongoing?)

There's Lex's quest coming to a head, Starro's vengeance, a War of Green Lanterns (Saint Walker's getting out while he can, then?), Batgirl versus the speedster Slipstream, the Secret Six dealing with the Get Out of Hell card again, a Jimmy Olsen one-shot (compiling the backups, plus the conclusion of the Maggie Mxyzptlk story,), Firestorm in the middle of a Qwardian/Sinestro/GL Corps melee for some Brightest Day related reason, and..

Creator John Rozum and hot BATMAN AND ROBIN artist Frazer Irving team up to deliver the finest in contemporary urban horror – with a Super Hero twist! As an undying, unchanging Xombi, David Kim must watch the world consume itself and burn while humanity grows more distant from each other due to the rise of technology. What would a Xombi do just to feel change again? And where will he ever be able to find a kindred soul?

This. Huh. Curious to know how long it'll last.

And, of course, there's a lead-in to summer stuff that's most likely not War of the Green Lanterns:

The legendary masked crime-fighter called Zorro, now in his sixties, has hung up his cape and sword. Living on a peaceful ranch in the new state of California, Don Diego tends to his cattle, breaks horses, and enjoys the company of his wife. When a renegade band of Confederate bushwhackers attack a nearby Indian settlement, though, Don Diego cannot just stand by and let innocents be slaughtered. Zorro heads back into action again... for the last time. Guest starring another legendary masked lawman - The Lone Ranger!

(Jerry Lawler, commercial artist. Who knew?)

Zorro perishes in his work, and the Lone Ranger avenges his death?

That just sounds perfect.

Just like something else in March, though for entirely different reasons; you see, it's from IDW post-Infestation..

GALVATRON. Last seen, he was leading a team of Decepticons through space. Clearly, he has a purpose, an agenda, and a vendetta. But how it will play out and to what end has been shrouded in mystery. That mystery is about to be revealed...

Abnett and Lanning, writing about a purple being enamored of cosmic forces in the fallout of a cosmic event involving the not-dead? There are, like, three jokes I can make about this, but it's got me anyway.

Anyway, that's just what looks good at first glance; who knows what'll turn out to be good, and what'll not? To say nothing of what's in the nine after, of course.

Oh, and for legality, a page from Phil Hester's first Days Missing series, #5 to be specific.

Well, it's cool that CrossGen is being relaunched, anyway - I was just starting to collect some of their titles in TPB when they went bust and stopped publishing them. If they can just resume where they left off, that'll be enough for me - I want Vol. 2 of 'Route 666', dammit!

Doubtful it'll continue where it left off. Even RUSE is going through a slight reboot where it's now set on actual Earth and none of that sigil stuff exists.

The whole Sigil-verse concept of "this completely Earth-like world is just like Earth, only it isn't Earth, really" is... awkward when the titles are standing on their own instead of part of a larger company-wide tapestry. I'd expect them to get rid of that aspect, even if they change nothing else.

I don't even know, man. I don't even know. That's my Iron Man canon over the title that Fraction/Larroca is heading up.

Wow, at least they're trying to bring Rhodey into some spotlight - Kitson art (I've been wondering what's happened to him, love his pencils)- I'll have a butcher's when it comes out. Yayyy for Young Allies having crossovers (boo for the Liefield covers, though but at least he's drawing feet?). Ironman/Thor looks like a good read. I have the first issue, and I need to get on top of that, STAT.

I'm still sore about Dr Strange who's supposed to be off somewhere, but getting just as much superhero action when he was SS. *still mourns Brother Voodoo*

I've given up on Marvel the moment I realized the key difference between the two companies:
DC's fuck-ups and editorial mandates happen because the creators and editors are trying to make comics they enjoy and fail to take into account the tastes of the rest of the world.
Marvel's fuck-ups and editorial mandates happen to feed the ego of Joe Quesada and a few "big name" writers. But especially Joe Quesada.
That's why even when DiDio and Quesada seemed to be doing the same thing on both sides, I always managed to find it in me to forgive DiDio.

Okay. I'm excited about the Crossgen relaunch. I loved Ruse back in the day and was very sad to see it (very sloppy) end. It looks like they might even have the old artist back, at least for the promotional art. I'm definitely going to be saving my spare change for this one.
