Batgirl #17 - fun fun fun 'til Daddy takes the Batpod away

2 and 2/3 pages from Batgirl #17, plus small preview image. My love for Steph/Damian team-ups continues to grow with this issue. Batgirl and Robin are investigating a series of kidnappings of upper-middle-class children (as opposed to Damian's 'child of the super-rich' class), and begin by trailing a group of schoolkids on a field trip to the museum. One of them has to go undercover and blend while the other serves as mission runner. Guess who's which, and how well it works out?





Observing Damian's attempts to mix with the schoolchildren, Steph discovers the chink in his armor.



The kidnappers acquire their target, but not for long with this ragtag team on their necks! After, Batgirl and Robin debrief and decompress.

"Batgirl" makes me so happy. Since Thor: The Might Avenger got canceled, this is my only "cute" book left. I hope it keeps it up - this issue wasn't a disappointment!

Damian works much better with someone who has a sense of humor. Hence why Dick and Stephanie work really well with him. (And Bruce and Tim do not - it also helps that Dick and Stephanie don't quite have the... brief though hostile history with Damian that Bruce and Tim do.) Dick and Stephanie both put up with him gracefully and know how to not only call him out on his crap but at the same time not over antagonize him.

If James Peaty "gets it" as well as Bryan Q. Miller does I might pick up the crossover with Supergirl for the next couple of months.

i did love this! it was a great issue. i love that line

I think I smiled through the entire issue. And I know I shouldn't be smiling through a Batbook, but I LOVE this title! Somewhere along the way Bruce has to assign Steph as Damien's babysitter!

Y'know, between this issue and the storyline with him and Colin, I could kinda see Damian becoming Protector of Gotham's Children? It works, in a weird way.

Now THIS is how to round out the character. Stop trying to convince us how awesome the little weasel is, and show us his weak points. Show us the things he's never done and doesn't know how to do. Point out the empty places in his life, then fill them. THAT'S how an unlikable character becomes likable. Stop telling us, and start showing us.

An interesting take, and one long overdue. I'm a little disappointed that neither Alfred nor Dick seem to have dealt with this lack in Damian before.

I know that Dick has been teaching him by making his Robin career an "adventure" rather than a "mission by some sort of Wayne-centric divine right", but you think they'd note that whilst Robin is oen thing, Damian is another, and seek to expand his narrow views and generally crap relaxation skills.

Nothing against Alfred - I adore Alfred; however, he didn't really deal with this lack in Bruce either. Or Jason. Alfred is a good care taker, and will give his opinion when he feels it's needed most, but if someone is adamant about doing or not doing something in his family, he usually lets them make their own mistakes. Perhaps he doesn't see it as his "role"?

Dick on the other hand has no excuses. (Does he even have a day job now a days? ;p)

I do like -- no, love -- how in the second-to-last panel he's bouncing up on and down with his arms crossed, posture looking quite stiff, no doubt attempting to bounce up and down in as straight an up-and-down line as possible. The entire character summed up in a profile of only his upper half.

The point of the bouncy castle is to positively reinforce the idea that Damian's unique outlook on life is wrong and that the right way to live life is Stephanie's 20th century, middle-class American concept of it.
