More fun with the favorite Carlie Cooper

In addition to the blatant "Mary Jane is jealous of Carlie" scene, there's some more of Dan Slott desperately trying to pedal Carlie as "the one" for Peter in the latest issue of Spider-Man. Granted, compared to Carlie shooting Tombstone and Mary Jane going "Peter's finally found out how to pick 'em", this is subtle in comparison.

Also, just looking at Google images, it's clear no one has any idea how Carlie is supposed to look besides "nerdy chick with glasses".  I'm holding out for a mohawk myself.

sometime in the future when Pete and MJ are back together someone can use this to make Carlie a better character. She knows Peter's Spidey and is trying to set him and MJ up

I actually like the idea of Carlie being closer to her good friend Spidey than her not-especially-convincing relationship with Peter, because it's an angle we haven't really seen before with a member of the "civilian" cast (except Flash Thompson, arguably), but it weakens the Peter/Carlie romance. Not only is it not that great a relationship if you've shared more of yourself with a mysterious masked vigilante than your boyfriend who you've known about as long, but it's a Silver Age dynamic in the sketchiest way; the longer Peter goes without telling Carlie the worse of a betrayal it is.

I'd say the writer is setting the relationship up for some serious drama except that none of the BND folks seem to have a problem with Peter not re-revealing his secret to Aunt May, and that's an even skeevier thing to do.

Because Clark felt bad about it and was doing it to protect her whereas Peter is being a smug asshole and is doing it because he thinks he's got a better chance as Peter than as Spider-Man.

I don't really get why he had to pretend he sucks at skating. I mean, he doesn't have to show off or anything, just skate normally. It's not like she's going to see him skate well and then be like, "My God, he must be Spider-Man!" I don't know, I've just always hated that whole thing where someone pretends that they don't know how to do something when they really do. Makes me feel bad for Carlie. I mean what kind of a relationship can they even have when Peter can't even be truthful about something as simple as roller skating?

Oh well, I guess this just reaffirms the reason why I don't pick up the main Spidey titles anymore, which is that at the moment, I really don't like the person Peter is. Sorry Peter, maybe I'll come back when they stop making you be such a douchewaffle. Till then I'll stick with the Spidey in Ultimate Spider-Man and the Avengers books. At least Bendis actually has Spider-Man still being heroic.

So let me get this straight MJ broke up with Peter because of the shitty reason that she couldn't take him being Spider-Man (even though it was stated before over and over that she was fine with him being Spidey) and now Peter is giving her the crappy excuse of "Oh hey I need a girl to love for Peter not Spider-Man" and implying that MJ only ever loved him for Spidey?!?

Also I call bullshit, Spider-Man is a big part of Peter Parker that rejecting him would be like rejecting Peter himself. There's no real separate identity there because unlike Bruce or Clark Peter doesn't put an act to fool those around him (he just makes excuses to cover up for himself) he's himself when he is Peter Parker and he is himself when he is Spider-Man.

Also why the fuck do you want a girl to get to know the real you if you practically lie about yourself (like the not being able to skate part). Seriously at least MJ wholly knew Peter from the start and is right now the only person who probably understands him better than anyone in existance (I would count Aunt May since she was wonderful during JMS run, but Marvel fucked that up).

I had a similar experience with a slightly different version of Clark, the one from the New Adventures of Superman live-action television series in the nineties. (I actually taught myself how to program a VCR so I could tape episodes that were on during my school day to watch on the weekends. Yes, I was a nerdy little girl.) Probably why these pages annoy me so much. Especially given that some (not all, mind, but a few, with some writers more than others) of the only moderately klutzy versions of Clark could be viewed as those versions of him being kind of shy and actually slightly physically awkward because of not being sure of the amount of force needed to perform a task without breaking something by accident with his superstrength (believable alternate character interpretation for certain versions, not so much for others); Peter is explicitly stated as acting like a moron here.
