An important aspect of the Martian Manhunter's history is that as a shapeshifter, he has used many alter egos over the years. This is explored in Martian Manhunter #17. J'onn may seem like one of Earth's lesser-known heroes, but he's is a lot more famous in the DCU than people think if you factor in his other identities

For some reason, shady-looking Americans have been investigating a number of seemingly random people throughout the world. Examples include a Japanese businessman, a homeless boy in Rio De Janerio and a stray cat in Venice. The Martian Manhunter finds these odd incidents troubling because these random people happen to be his alter egos.

J'onn's favourite government antagonists! Not wanting any surprises, Agent Chase arranges every mode of surveillance the D.E.O. has to prepare for J'onn's arrival.

J'onn, of course, refuses immediately. Come to think of it, the JLA should be praying day and night that no telepath ever joins one of these shadowy government organisations(MaxcoughLordcough).

Back at the JLA Watchtower J'onn discusses the issue with Superman, who meekly suggests that he wipe their memories instead(!). J'onn responds that doing so would validate their fears of metahumans like him.

Meanwhile, Chase is at home, going through her father's diary. Apparently he was a member of the Justice Experience, a superhero team led by the Bronze Wraith, another of J'onn's alter egos.

Finally, the D.E.O. goes public with J'onn's secret IDs. The reaction is not quite what they were expecting.

But no harm done, because Mr. Bones had a back-up plan in place in case the announcement backfired on them.

Ouch! J'onn shows up for a little chat regarding her father and leaves to tie up other loose ends.

Cute kitty.

It was probably the driving licence that gave the game away.

So J'onn's family died, along with everyone on his planet.
Then he got pulled to Earth by Dr. Erdel, who died shortly after.
Then after a while with the JLA, joined the Justice Experience, who all died.
Then he joined the JLI, Tora died, Max shot Ted through the head dead, and Diana killed Max.
At some point during all this, he had a partnership with Karen Smith until his brother killed her.

Starting to think J'onn is a J'inx!

Well, yeah, they're in the DCU. If they were in Marvel they'd be lynching people on the basis that they could be a mysterious green alien in disguise... which pretty much happened anyway, now that I think about it.

Lynching and eating. Don't forget the barbecues.

Well, okay, that last part only happened when they were right. And Skrull Kill Chef Krew was around to set it up.

So by exposing his identities, they invalidated them? That doesn't necessarily stop him, you know. He can just make more of them and fill the same roles that he did before.
Also, why on earth would they bother to expose a secret identity as a CAT? What good would that do?

Their intention was to create panic among the general public that an alien had been living among them in disguise. The cat would add to the creepiness factor.

It probably would have worked better if they'd picked a VILLAINOUS shapeshifting alien - J'onn's a hero who's saved millions of lives, so it's not surprising everyone goes 'yeah, so? He helped us, didn't he?'

In this instance it was J'onn they were targeting. The scans tell the whole story: they were suspicious of all metahumans, so they asked for J'onn's assistance in monitoring them. He refused, so they punished him.

And given the umpteen stories told about people being suspicious of aliens/mutants and so on, it was a viable tactic.

Right, I get that; I'm just saying that revealing a GOOD guy has been living amongst you in disguise is just basically not going to be as effective a shock tactic as if he were a bad guy. (Also, it probably depends on which universe you're in - the DCU, as a whole, seems far more tolerant of this sort of thing than the MU, given the latter's bigotry against mutants and semi-regular persecution of various heroes. If they'd tried it in the MU, it might have worked.)

And like J'onn told Superman, his identities are more than disguises. They form part of his psyche(literally, he has a 'mental sanctuary' inhabited by them on the astral plane) and losing them means a lot to him.

I wonder if anyone's ever compiled a master list of every identity J'onn maintains. Also, where did the idea that he maintains multiple identities across the world first show up? The earliest I'm aware of is a short story in a JLA special around the time Morrison's run began.

In the Trial by Fire story arc he is shown to have at least a few dozen alter egos. I don't think they were ever listed.

One of them I remember from Morrison's JLA run was as a frequent cab driver (Rastafarian or African Muslim perhaps) that Clark Kent used.

Looks like she forgot the first rule of government work - never do anything your boss tells you to without getting it via email first. The red tape's there for a reason, honey, and it's to cover your own backside.

Because he's lived so many diverse and colorful lives, this popped into my head. Are any of those personas gay? Lesbian? Or do his lives simply stop at a "meet/greet/save" people level?

In his human IDs he largely avoids forming bonds with other people and keeps to himself.
