Tomorrow as many may have heard shall be the re-lease of Fantastic Four #587, featuring a Fantastic Four member dying, with speculation going for virtually each member.

In 2006 however the concept was kinda toyed around with in a one-shot Fantastic Four: A Death in the Family in which a member died, sorta. I decided this'd be a nice story to post too since I've been a fan of the Human Torch ever since I saw him as a kid.

The story was 23 pages and I'll be posting 7.5 pages

The story opens up with Johnny waking up to find out he's overslept and forgotten to clean his room on the Four's spring cleaning day of the year and Sue's going around inspecting the place. Johnny has Ben try to cover for him while he tries to fix his place up before Sue shows up.

Reed being a genius who never ignores his family and small tasks *cough* has of course cleaned his place up nice and pretty. Then Johnny opens up the wrong door to head back to his room to fix it.

And in a kinda funny thing to note the whole story constantly jokes about Sue making a pretty bad chili, thus everyone being instantly pepped after hearing she'll let the resident hothead make it.

Johnny and Sue then go about cooking the chili with each other having a heart to heart. With the two talking about how as a kid Sue essentially raised Johnny and has essentially been the mom no matter where she was, even with the Four in many ways as she has to have them clean their places up. And Johnny points out that she's always been good at that...

...Little foreshadowing there...

Suddenly their moment is broken up as an alarm roars through the Baxter building. A extra dimensional monster is loose in Reed's lab. Seems it came through the tesseract space Reed stuffed his parts in.

Sue's holding it off with her shield as Reed tries to find a science gun to shoot it back to its dimension, but (and I'm cutting the getting killed scene here for page room)...

What would you do if you had...One More Hour?

And so Johnny goes back exactly an hour reliving the issue essentially with some minor changes, including clocking his slightly younger self so he can make sure he can save Sue without interference, this time around Johnny avoids opening the door to the tesseract space but Ben does it anyway so when that happens Johnny burns everything that pops out hoping that'll stop the monster from emerging.

The battle goes nearly the same as before but before it can strike and kill Sue Johnny jumps in front of the monsters attack and survives it since he's in his flame form and the monster couldn't burn him, then Johnny's slightly younger self wakes up and helps the group until Reed can port the monster back to its home.

Cue ending page with the Four in a sorta hug while Ben says "Then ya done good, kid. Ya done good."

The story did leave a lasting impression on me. Johnny knew his actions could do nothing for himself and his family but he had to make sure there was at least one place where things didn't go bad because of his bad choices and it's always been a bit of a problem to me where Johnny would go through stories where he'd learn to be more responsible only for him to be portrayed as his old self yet again later, you know, status quo and all that but I do always enjoy the stories showing him with a good head on his shoulders like this.

I remember hearing of this Death in the Family when it first came out, and how it was advertised as a tie-in with CIVIL WAR. Presumably, Sue was to be killed in some supervillain fight, which is what drove Reed to go so overboard helping Stark with the Superhuman Registration Act. When it actually came out... I saw it had nothing at all to do with supervillains or CIVIL WAR. Though I suppose it could be seen as fodder for a pro-Super Science Registration Act...
