Superman versus Darkseid: Apokolips Now and bonus material Superman/Batman 24 and 25 under the cut.

Superman Versus Darkseid: Apokolips Now (38 page story). Darkseid seized the body of Steel and used him to motivate his own Imperviex. Begins with a flashback to how Superman puts together a team to invade Apokolips.



That's Natasha Irons, Steel's daughter.





Kara stows away on the Boom Tube.

Superman challenges Darkseid to meet him at an asteroid. Once he's there, using a Mother Box to pool their power, Superboy and Linda Danvers-Supergirl seal it off. Eradicator and Kara fight off Darkseid's minions. Eradicator turns into a giant and Kara is a little hysterical.



Pew! Pew!



Natasha places a chunk of Aegis doohickey into some armor. Somehow it teleports her right onto Apokolips in front of the big Imperviex door. But it is guarded by DOOMSDAY! (What the heck was he doing there?)



Suddenly! The incomplete Imperviex wakes up! He smushes Doomsday to save his daughter!





But Irons was dead.



Natasha decides to continue to superhero.



Superman/Batman 24. The Joker has a fragment of Mr. Mxyzsptlk's power left. Mxy and him play a game of imaginary alternate universes (allowing them to break the Rule of 52). Bizarro acts as Mxy's general.





Black-suited Supergirl was Cir-El, who was some sort of future clone.

Superman/Batman 25.







Cue the big alternate everybody fight, all of which leads to the Joker throwing up the fragment, which turns out to be--Batmite. The End, everyone goes poof!

she's technically still around, she's still part angel i think.... but yeah, i miss her too

Yeah...but not active in any capacity, mostly she just went around in "Reign In Hell" being frantic and having a belt made of fire. That's no fun, I want her to take on the role of Superwoman or Avenging Angel or some such.

Would have definitely made more sense that sucking former stewardess Lucy Lane into that role (and into a super-villain). I'm actually thankful DC seems to have forgotten her, given that they don't seem to want anyone to remember that a Supergirl before the current one exists she would almost certainly end up as cannon fodder in some lame crossover.

Speaking of potentially lame crossovers, Doomsday's back! And he's gunning for folks who were around back when he first appeared, which means that perhaps Matrix might be targeted. I could see a Linda mention if someone wanted to go there.

Suffice it to say that this is the original pre-Crisis Kara, who somehow wound up in the post-Crisis universe. Complete with Silver Age Kryptonian powers.

She's from the PAD story Many Happy Returns, which is really very good and you should totally buy in trade. It's probably my favorite Linda Danvers stories, though if anyone has another good one I'd love to hear about it.

Many Happy Returns is my favorite Supergirl story of all time. Those who haven't read definitely should. It had Ed Benes before he became all T&A (his Linda and Kara were drawn very differently) and IMO it was also a better way of re-introducing Kara Zor-El (her Crisis sacrifice intact) without pretending she had never existed and rebooting her from scratch and with a darker, more obnoxious personality.

Pre-crisis Supergirl had a career that started in 1959. COIE was in 1985. That's over 25 years of material you can post without attracting the attention of You-Know-Who. None of these scans are from that era. And though some of these characters are named Kara Zor-El, they are written horribly out of charater--to the point where I dispute that they are actually pre-crisis Kara Zor-El.

It was dramatic..! Also I wanted to avoid using Voldemort's name.

This incarnation of Kara is, mentally, only a couple days into the Golden/Silver Age. She IS a completely different character than the last characterization of the REAL Kara in Crisis. But the continuity makes her "pre-Crisis Kara" as opposed to current age Kara.

I'd love if new Kara were confronted with her old self, but in a much less slapdash manner than we see here.

Even 50's Kara was never that niave. She seems innocent to the point of dumb here. I can see why they would make her over dramatic but she was prone to getting into mischief, stringing along multiple boyfriends and decieving those around her very easily. Jim Mooney's Supergirl often had a giggly knowing quality about what she was doing, almost like faux innocence to serve an end much in the same way Clark bumbled around the Daily Planet.

Man, I loved Superboy's second costume. It sucks that they only had it for a little bit before switching to the tee shirt and jeans thing. (And, sadly, that the Superboy series switched to one of the WORST artists ever while he was wearing it.)

Also, cool, Cir-el! Why can't Clark remember her again? Was it that stupid hypno-coffee?

For the record Cir-El was not clone (in the sense Superboy is) but the actual (DNA wise) future daughter of Lois and Clark (I think she actually called Lois "Mommy" which made LL freak) formed by the Futuresmiths. She was made partially from DNA of Lois that the villains had picked up from one of Lois's coffee cups (seriously, that was the plot). In the end she sacrificed herself and wiped herself from existence.

In retrospect, Cir-El was (in itself) not a bad idea (a future grown teen daughter of Lois and Clark) but she was "announced" by DC as the next Supergirl while the Linda Danvers/Kara Zor-El storyline in Many Happy Returns was STILL going on (and the Supergirl title's sales were rising when it was cancelled) so she put off a lot of Linda and Kara fans from the beginning. Her ugly costume didn't help either.

I'd argue that Superboy isn't a clone either, in the same sense. Considering how close DNA-wise humans are to chimpanzees, having half your DNA come from a *different* person than the one you're supposed to be cloned from is a HUUUGE difference. As in, not identical at all.

I'm not sure if that was Cir-El's story by the end, it was rather awkward though I still love the gal and her costume to bits. I think by the end they said Mia was a girl Brainiac and the Futuresmiths kidnapped and altered her genetically to be a small part Kryptonian.

I was confused about the title until I got to that one page. But it falls to me to point out that it looks an awful like the artist drew a merkin on the Silver Age Supergirl's skirt.
