The Saga of Aunt May and the Mole Man: Epilogue

While my last post was the big finish to the romance between Aunt May and the Mole Man, the story's not quite over yet. Stan the Man still had one week short of Sunday (when he began his next storyline) to focus on the aftermath of the marriage. Again, the past installments can be seen in the tags below.













...and thus ends the tale of a romance for the ages.

I'm done with posting Spider-Man newspaper strips for the moment, but if Stan ever does a story as bizarre and cracky as this one again, you can bet I'll be sharing it here.

You know, I knew at one point but where do I go to see Stan's strips, he has a site right? Or are they only in newspapers?

Never were truer words spoken, Spidey. This whole storyline has been a back-and-forth routine:

'You can't marry the Mole Man!'

'But I want to marry the Mole Man!'

'You CAN'T marry the Mole Man!'

'But I WANT to marry the Mole Man!'

(By the way, if you hear Andie McDowall's voice in your head while reading that - well, it's not a coincidence.)

Well, no - first it was MJ saying "I CAN'T marry the Mole Man!" and Aunt May stepping up and saying "I'LL marry the Mole Man!"

I have to talk to the dolphins now! Eeeek! Eeeek!

True enough, but that was more of the set-up. Once that had been established, it was totally 'you can't', 'I want to'.
I was WONDERING whether anyone would get that reference...

Taking another look at this, it's amazing that it works at all because it violates one of the cardinal rules of storytelling; if your plot is goofy as fuck, never have the characters draw attention to the fact that it's goofy as fuck if you want to retain any suspension of disbelief. The reason this works despite that is because, against all odds, it's true to the characters. May has always been the best at seeing the goodness in everyone, sometimes to a fault. But with Moleman it works because he really is just Hugo's Hunchback reoutfitted. And you can't miss if you've got good source material.
