Why does DC have Paul Cornell again? I had this comic on my pull list until I saw he was going to fill in two issues, and due to that I took it off. Now they go and do this...GAH. I mean, it's not going back on my list, but I'll watch for the trade when it comes out in seventy-five years. Gah!

Also, I'm going to say it: I like "the whole family" as defined by that last panel. Others will probably complain, but I like it.

Well now I need to go reread the issue with the movie night after Bruce's "death" for some comparison.

And I'll be the first to say it, but "whole family"? I'm beginning to think that Cass and her adoption was just a collective hallucination.

On a note on which I realize YMMV, what the hell kind of family movie night has everyone on separate chairs? This is what couches are *for*: family togetherness and that one sibling who appears to sharpen their elbows.

I mean yes, it's cute and fuzzy and I love it, but not unreservedly.

You would think that Damien would be interested in the movie that helped make his father "The Batman" and had a pivotal role in Bruce's life. Frankly, I'm surprised Damien doesn't know ALL about what made Bruce the Bat. It seems like the kind of thing Talia would tell him, so he could follow in his father's footsteps.

Where are the f*&#)%^ girls!? Seriously, besides the fact that Cass is adopted just as Dick and Tim are, what about Babs? Stephanie? I'm not saying invite the entire JLA, but really, if you wanted to have a "boys-night-in," just call it that and don't try to pass it off as "family bonding time" if the whole family isn't there. Otherwise I just am going to consider everyone in that panel, at best, insensitive and tactless, which, frankly, is a family I don't want to read about.

Cass is the only one of those I'd consider "Family" in the traditional sense. Everyone in that scene is either Bruce's adoptive father, his adoptive son, or his biological son. So his adopted daughter's absence is pretty glaring.

Babs is more like that really close co-worker and friend, especially since they only started working together as adults. As for Steph, she and Bruce have pretty much just gotten to the place where they can be around each other without someone getting fired or slapped. I consider her more part of Babs' family than anything.

But yeah, the absence of Cass from the Wayne family (which is really what this is, not the Bat-family) as a whole as of late is pretty irksome. And then there's Jason, but that's a whole other can of worms.

Love this. And yes, count me in with Bruce that his whole family is there in this moment, with one big grey area for Jason who died and came back but stands against them. This is pretty much it currently.

I don't understand the confusion whenever Bruce mentions his family that there's supposed to be girls (plural) in it. This is the Wayne family. The only girl who has any reason to be a Wayne is Cass, and even in her case she was an adult woman Bruce may or may not have legally adopted but never actually was her father. Her actual father's still alive. I don't think Bruce's adoption proceedings, even if they are supposed to have gone through, means that from now on the relationship they had before is insulting.

How old was Tim when he was adopted, though? 16, 17? I'm not sure how old Cass canonically was, but it can't have been much older than that, and to my mind Tim's relationship with Bruce has always been much more professional than parent-child - I'm still mystified that Tim goes around calling himself Tim Wayne now (Dick and Jason don't do that, after all. It's weird). I mean I think there's love there, but I don't think Bruce really raised Tim in the way that he raised Dick and Jason. Whereas Cass, obviously Cass was oldish when she met Bruce, older than Tim was, but I think Bruce had a way more significant effect on her personality, her values, her life than he did on Tim's.

My point here is that if Tim can be there, it's weird that Cass isn't or we're somehow supposed to think she shouldn't be there.

I can kind of see why people are upset about Cass not being there, but I mean, it's canon that she's in Hong Kong right now. Like, is she supposed to fly home for movie night or something?

Cass: *picks up phone* Hello?
Tim: Hey Cassandra, how's it going!
Cass: I'm busy fighting muggers and ninjas at the moment, what do you want?
Tim: Well I just wanted to let you know that Bruce and the rest of the family are going to take the night off and have a movie night!
Cass: ....
Tim: And we really want you to come!
Cass: ....
Tim: We're gonna watch Zorro!
Cass: *hangs up*

Also, I'd argue that Jason should be there more than Cass, but unless something has changed with him, I'm sure any invitation to him would have been met with a "Go screw yourself". Isn't he still in jail, anyways? Too many Bat books and Bat people. I can't keep up.

I really don't care about any excuses about how Cass is busy or Barbara isn't 'really' family; I'm just plain sick of the repeated use of guys but not girls in the Batfamily. I don't think Damian would say 'gonna'. He generally talks a bit more formally than that.
And while I get the 'where are the girls?' argument, and to some extent agree with it, I'd say a good answer would probably be 'all the girls are busy'. I mean, Babs is... she's in the middle of a plot twist right now, I think, so SHE'S not available; Steph is in college, so maybe she's got homework, and Cass is in Hong Kong. It's more 'all the available family that would fit in the panel. And that we have armchairs available for.'

I echo the "perfect until the last fucking line" comments. Where the hell are Babs, Jason, Cass and Leslie?

I want to buy an entire run of the excellent Batman: Family mini from the 2000s and make Tomasi read it and re-read it until he gets it.

And on that note, I want Cass to meet Damian soon. I want her to effortlessly own him, and then give him the spanking he so richly deserves, while Tim and Steph share popcorn and make with the colour commentary.

Babs and Steph not being there I don't really have an issue with, neither are part of Bruce's family these days, though they are part of Batman's family, and it's been mentioned before that Steph not being a part of the Wayne social scene makes sense for her protection. The less she's connected with them, the more protection she has as/when crud hits windmill, for Tim, Dick and Damian, it's too late.

Jason not being there I have, as you might imagine, no problem with.

What with the various universe resets, I'm no longer sure what level of involvement in Bruce's life Leslie has now had, and I'm not sure she's ever been presented as someone who was part of the Wayne (extended) family to the extent of coming over for dinner, or a movie night etc...

Cass is indeed more of an issue, to me the fundamental question seems to be not whether or not intent to the adopt is canon, which it is, but whether it was ever completed.

If the Outsiders issue says (or at least strongly implies) that it wasn't completed before Bruce's apparent demise then it's probably no? I can imagine it's not something Cass or Dick would have pursued believing Bruce was dead.

Should her status be addressed and clarified now he's back? Heck yes. (Perhaps Bruce mentioning that he's just off the phone, Cass sends her best and to save her a spot for her at movie night the next time she's in town)
