In honour of Dwayne McDuffie: Firestorm

When Dwayne McDuffie took over writing duties for the Jason Rusch Firestorm series he already knew the title was heading for cancellation. He only got to write three issues but it still some of the best writing and some of the best fight scenes that any of the Firestorms have ever gotten.

Here's three pages from issue #33.

lol You're right. I suggested the two due to being fire based..but a better match...Hohenheim vs. Firestorm. lol Then again Hohenheim can't fight..maybe..Father vs. Firestorm?

Oh how this makes me wish Dwayne had a longer run on Firestorm. It probably could of been on of those feel good series like Ultimate Spidey or Mark Waid's run on The Flash.

Am reading this next to someone who said she's not sure who Dwayne McDuffie was, but a lot of people she knows are sad that he's gone. So I just turned my screen to show her those pages and said "That's why we miss him."

The thing about ridiculously overpowered characters like Firestorm that isn't taken advantage of much is that they CAN goof around like this because they can handle just about anything your average crook dishes out. Nowadays, crimefighting is seeeeeeeerious business - unless you're a 'comedy' hero, you're not allowed to crack wise. Personally, I think that's a shame - it makes comics that much less entertaining.

Heheh. It's difficult to make snark work so well for a character from the get-go. Most people overdo it and make it annoying.

The "Oh right, we are" bit does make me wonder--is it public knowledge that Firestorm are two people bonded in one body?

Anyway, that was a pretty fun scene. :)

One of the things I noticed when I was preparing these scans was that if you mentally edit out the Professor's comments, since I think only Jason can hear them, it still sounds like Jason's making witty rhetorical quips, not like he's a crazy person.

Well, aside from the 'we' plural pronoun bit.

I don't know why "Shooty McBigot" cracked me up, but it did. This made me smile all the way through -- and I really like when comics do that.
