This one scene is so much better then the combined total BND/BT story lines that now I'm glad Spidey is joining the FF.

It's because Hickman is actually a good writer, unlike Dan Slott, who is an overrated hack!
Funny how that works!

I give Slott a certain amount of slack because he's done some really good stuff in the past (She-Hulk, The Initiative, Mighty Avengers) and a lof of what he's done with Spidey the last few years is stuff that is handed down from Quesada.

To some extent, I think Slott is a little like Bendis. Bendis does his absolute best work in small, focused low-concept stories, and falls on his ass whenever he's asked to go cosmic or widescreen. Maybe he doesn't do it immediately - i.e. Siege being pretty good for three issues - but he will in some way eventually.

Slott's got the same sort of binary problem. He seems to be a great writer as long as he's not either wallowing in continuity porn or on a really high-profile book. She-Hulk was great; Initiative had its moments. Mighty Avengers and ASM, on the other hand, have at least as much bad as good.

"He seems to be a great writer as long as he's not either wallowing in continuity porn ... She-Hulk was great;"

I haven't read a lot of She-Hulk, but from what I read, a lot of the book WAS continuity porn, just using said continuity to create interesting legal dillemas in the Marvel universe.

Well, there's using continuity, and then there's continuity porn.

He uses continuity very well indeed a great deal of the time, but then he does something like that issue involving the alternate-reality vacation agency that just comes off as weirdly defensive.

I think one of Slott's greatest strengths AND greatest weaknesses is his skill at toeing the editorial line. It's a strength because he's managed to tell some great stories by playing within the fairly arbitrary confines of editorial mandate that many other writers would try to ignore or desperately gloss over. On the other hand, because that mandate is so arbitrary and subject to change, it can make his writing seem flat or insincere, like he's just writing what he's told to write.
