Well with my previous post (with Lionheart and the JLI) the portion known as the Outbreak has ended we now begin the Earthplague portion of Bloodlines.

Admittedly this story seems a bit  dated given the technology focus of the story but it's still one of my favorites. Now watch in awe (or is it despair) as Robin meets the Psyba-Rats.

18 pages from a 56 page story.

As with many stories related to the Bat Family this one opens with Robin in serious peril.

Pff, oh Robin.

We then see Robin go out on his night of crime patrolling when he sees a group on top of a Waynecorp building. one with its own communication satellite.

Robin is about to go after them but they spot him, Channel maces him and they all jump. Robin at first thinks they're a suicidal group until he sees them open their chutes and make a quick getaway.

The group, the PSyaba-Rats were hired by a rich and powerful buisnessman who was hoping to steal some secrets from Waynecorrp that he could use to destroy his companies competition he's called the Collector. They go to tell him about the bad news from their failed mission.

So the goons go after the Psyba-Rats killing Megabiter who had no apparent role in the team but was there long enough to act as a human shield for Rae.

The Psyba-Rats make a run for it but in the skirmish Venev shows up out of relatively nowhere killing the goons and biting both Channel and Rae and then fleeing when she gets spotted by the headlights of the Gotham police, though they don't get a good look at her it seems (Venev).

Meanwhile Timmy boy is looking up what he can from what the Psyba-Rats left in their rush to get away from him.

The last line mostly being a reference to Jean Paul who didn't want Tim as his sidekick as Jean slowly grew more unstable during his tenure as Batman.

Tim then realizes that the team thus far have been rather local and heads to the shops in Gotham that have climbing equipment name dropping the Psyba-Rats until he figures out which one is where they get their gear from and acts like he knows them managing to get some details off the store worker who sold them their gear.

Oddly come to think of it I don't think "Output" is ever seen or mentioned aside from that screen. Hmm.

Back to the Psyba-Rats we see the effects of the bites Channel and Rae received.

Rae as we see gets the ability to turn her arms into super thin blades.

Channel...

Huh, it's kinda funny I do always forget that technically Channel is also a New Blood though he's essentially a free floating computer program like say Hank Henshaw after his transformation rather than having a physical change like the others.

Robin to get more leads goes back and does what the Psyba-Rats were going to do to get some leads feeding Collector fake data to get him interested in a meet up so that Robin could nab him. And he uses the cute hacker name of Dos Boot saying "Hackers just LOVE cute codenames."

And yes I like to point out Output is once again completely glossed over, huh, wonder what his story would've been.

After some plot of Robin and Rae going to the Collector the two meet again while Rae and her group are breaking in to Collectors place with Channel using himself to trick all the video feeds the Security guards see.

And cue Rae and Robin fighting the Collector.

(Can't say it makes sense for her to be able to catch up to Robin after he's already free falling but it's still a cool scene.)

And so Rae was saved from killing Collector, Robin becomes a(n honorary) Psyba-Rat, and we get two New Bloods in one though Channel's a rather minor one since Rae's the main character here.

Admittedly I liked how headstrong Rae was and how she led the team and I do like how visual her powers is when she transforms her arms. Her friendship with Robin/his membership was brought up later again in the 3 issue Psyba-Rats mini that came after the Bloodlines event ended and in a Chuck Dixon issue of Young Justice (fitting as he wrote her/created her in this story as well).

And this new character's latest appearance had her be killed by a whinny uber-teen while she was under the control of a higher evil power without saying a single thing...

When did Superloser kill her? I don't remember her being among the new bloods killed.

According to Comic Vine, it was Infinite Crisis #7, along with a bunch of other New Bloods and Solomon Grundy. Insult to injury, she was then brought back as a Black Lantern and went to Earth-Prime along with a veritable Superboy-Prime Revenge Squad, where she was incinerated and her ashes apparently "remain in the basement of Superboy-Prime’s home on Earth-Prime."

I've always liked Razorsharp. She's got interesting powers, a distinct character, and a built-in supporting cast. Shame she got killed, but hey, it's comics - she could be back.
And you gotta love how EXUBERANT Channel is here. "I can make Freddy Krueger the dad on the Brady Bunch! I can get the castaways off Gilligan's island! I can make the ending of Twin Peaks comprehensible!" Hee hee.
(One reference of his I didn't get, though, was 'beaming the crew of the Enterprise onto the Ponderosa'. I know who the crew of the Enterprise are, of course, but what's the Ponderosa?)

It's the ranch that's the setting of the western Bonanza.

Ah, thanks. I was guessing it would be the real name of the Love Boat, or something like that.

I always loved Tim trying out his "bad attitude" here. I can image Bruce practicing his scowl in front of a mirror too, with Alfred offering advice... "No, no.. narrow the eyes a bit further, and just a hint of snarl in your growl"

I looove the art here. Not my usual cup of tea, but the dynamic poses they did for Tim are amazing.

On/Off topic, the other day I saw a kid wearing a Tim Drake shirt and my envy was almost too obvious. Rar.

The psyba-rats seem interesting. What happened to them?

I really like the art too. I haven't seen too much of Kieron Dwyer's work but I've always been impressed.
