I always kind of assumed that the guy took that opportunity to get away - he's leaning pretty far out towards what looks like an open door in that second-to-last panel - and the two of them are highly embarrassed about this fact and driving along in a state of 'I'll say nothing if you'll say nothing'. But then again, I don't know anything about the context, so...
