(Well, not really but I had to say it.)
18 pages of a 54 page story.
Our this time opens in Metropolis as we see The Last Son of Krypton on one of his battles clearing mechanzied crime off of the street.
The Metropolis SCU (Special Crimes Unit) comes in right after the baddies have been defeated.
Meet Eddie Walker a disgruntled SCU member.
We see through a flashback he only recently became handicapped after charging headfirst in his SCU vehicle after a baddie in a souped up car leading to horrific crash on his end after he failed to follow orders and hang back for back up.
He's a pretty depressed dude. After that event he was taken off active duty and now has a desk job, a demotion in his eyes.
Contemplating suicide he's stopped before he can do it, getting a call about strange murders that've popped up in Metropolis. ( I can only assume that overall the events in the Man of Steel,Superman, Action Comics and the later Adventures of Superman titles happened at a very close time since no one seems to reference the previous New Bloods like Edge and Myriad who popped up in Metropolis)
So to the street he goes.
Lissik prepares to go for her kill but...
And they leave Eddie for dead. You'd think the Parasites would have caught on by now that that's not a good idea...
Afterwards Lissik sets her eyes for the toughest man in town and jumps off a building to get his attention.
Meanwhile Eddie Walker has woken up and has found himself transformed, but with no memory (as many of the New Bloods were initially after their bites). He sees Lissik and Superman battling and feels that she's somehow related to his condition and goes after her, interfering with Supermans battle. Superman is not happy and they get in a scuffle and Eddie grabs the unconscious woman/
But before the battle can continue Eddie realizes he's gonna need some clothes.
He looks like a super powered bouncer. :D
As they battle the SCU hears about the goings on and head to where it is, hoping it's not something like Doomsday all over again.
And the SCU, particularly Maggie get in between the fight.
Yeah, this Last Son of Krypton isn't keen to paying attention to things like SCU people in the van he just threw...
Maggie's in it, surprisingly OK and pointing her weapon at him.
And then Pritor and Glonth arrive to help Lissik out who just woke.
But even worse is that Superman seconds later with his energy powers accidentally ignites the fuel in a crashed tanker when he goes to subdue one of the Parasites making the whole place all the more unstable.
And Superman gets taught the meaning of true heroism by Eddie and the two actually shake hands, probably this Last Son of Krypton's first moment of friendship with anyone.
He leaps off saying "Me? I'm just a Loose Cannon!"
Well a little more on the guy. Like we see he changes color depending on mood, though more specifically the angrier he gets similarly he gets stronger (along with a color change) and more irrational though it doesn't play a big part here. He also is apparently only super at night sorta like a werewolf or vampire, he apparently can't trigger the transformation on his own.
Now admittedly at first he comes off clearly like a Hulk (and yes the story is amusingly written by Jeph Loeb, yes, that Jeph Loeb who later brought us the thrilling Rulk). It's actually funny since Eddie's later appearances paint him much more like She-Hulk than Hulk. When transformed he lives the night life and essentially has all the fun he couldn't in his human form (regardless of his actual handicap I'll point out) IE he's more relaxed and overconfident and so on acting out his loose cannon-y feelings now rather than in his day life.
Dunno if he ever revealed his story to Maggie after this but he did also have a four issue mini after the Bloodlines event ended and he's still around in the DCU today though only in cameos and the like. And hopefully I'm not the only one who'd love to see him have a series as opposed to say Rulk today...
