[personal profile] superboyprime posting in [community profile] scans_daily

[personal profile] mad already posted the stand-out panel of this issue, a few posts down. Here's four more pages...

Yes, that's Saganowahna, who was last seen dead in the pages of 52. Remember when we thought DC would at least have the bravery to try to end the constant resurrections? Sigh.

The source turns out to be the Flash, who's wearing some headband that's affecting his mind. Superman helpfully removes it, returning him to normal. The two reverse the changes he made to the town.

Also, we all know that Barry Allen was inspired to become the Flash by the Golden Age Flash. But what superhero inspired Superman? Well...

so what did Barry say about Kon? (cuz it seems that in every non Flash book he's in, he comes off as a condescending asshole).

It was them briefly catching the Kid Flash/Superboy race, and speculating on the winner as one would be wont to do.

Iron Munro. I didn't think JMS was smart enough to reference anything Roger Stern ever did.

Isn't the Saganowahna title passed around to one to another of Tribesmen?

I really like the tripping waitress scene, and think Superman's thought bubble explaining that they were sped up so she appeared to barely be moving was a totally unnecessary clanger. Sometimes you should just trust your audience to keep up, okay?

According to Morrison, he wasn't meant to remain dead:

"If there had been space in the last issue I would have included a coda to the Super-Chief story. I had plans for Jon Standing Bear's return but we couldn't fit them in when issue #52 went from 52 pages to 40. I'm sure he'll turn up somewhere else.

So why the heck did Barry (proving again that he's really adding nothing to the role of Flash that Wally wasn't doing just as well) put the ruddy headband on in the first place?

Still not sure why Clark would ever think that Kon could keep up with Bart... I'm all for rooting for the home team, but sometimes it just makes you look bad.

Two other quick things;

Why is young Clark wearing glasses, he didn't need them and if he was never Superboy there was no need to wear them as a disguise.

Nice nod to Arn Munro who was, of course, introduced post-Crisis as a sort of analogue for Golden Age Superman in the "Young All Stars" (and is probably still around somewhere)

I've seen that headband somewhere before, but I can't remember where.

It's a pair of X-Ray glasses he ordered off the back of the comic...

wait... that makes even less sense... or does it?... it does...

You're one or two reboots behind. Geoff Johns' "Secret Origin" is the current Superman origin.

He didn't... This is Chris Roberson's work. The fact that he also retconned a bit from earlier in the storyline (in an unposted page) is proof of that.

Think I'll edit the tags.

If Secret Origin is the new continuity clark needs them the keep his heat vision in check or he will have a smallville moment.

The lens are from his spaceship that absorbs the excess premature heat. :)

The first thing I thought of were the 'Halos' in the Minority Report movie.

But I'm also getting the deja vu sense that I've seen those in a Superman story before.

I remember headbands were as a common fashion accessory in some depictions of Krypton, but I'm sure that I've seen a 'learning/mind control' variant one too.

"Rocks from Krypton only take powers away. They don't grant them."

Hmm. What about Metallo? Of course, he only uses Kryptonite as a power source for his cyborg body. If there was anything else he could run on (and weaken Superman) he would.

Honestly, you you wait 30 years for an origin and then three come along all at once....

That's a new Super Chief.

I also dug the comics inspiration. Iron Munroe is awesome.

Psyched for next issue with Young Bruce and Clark! :D

haha, you could've skipped all of those! clark's current (fairly silly) glasses origin by johns is actually from the silver age. that's why he had them in the old superboy issues.

So now Barry knows Kryptonian too? I guess Bruce and Clark can't have those seeeecret conversations.

Now, I could be wrong, but I'm 98% certain that in the Silver Age he did not wear them to prevent accidentally blasting someone with heat vision because he was feeling horny, even reading between the lines I never got that. In fact he wore the glasses because he was already Superboy, and because they were the only lenses he could actually use his heat vision through without melting them.

So like 90% of Johns ideas it's a rather inane idea from the Silver Age. Got it.

Same here! Especially since Bruce is also going to drop in on Clark in the present day. And since Clark has been suffering from PTSD from the whole New Krypton outcome and isn't ok right now, I kind of want Bruce to have a heart to heart talk with him.

Because no matter how emotionally effed up Bruce is, I always liked the fact that he is one of the first people who give Clark a shoulder to lean on when he needs it.
