So Marvel Zombies Supreme's a five-issue series pitting a team of SHIELD agents (and Battlestar, because superhuman backup is superhuman backup) against clone Squadron Supreme zombies in Project PEGASUS's basement.

It's competently but not spectacularly written; its first issue last week got a bit of a drubbing, mostly for being a Marvel Zombies series.

That's not to say the undead aren't, though:

It's just that they're subject of cloning and DNA grafting by a mad PEGASUS scientist who conned the good extra-dimensional Squadron Supreme for the sake of ill-defined own terminal disease staving off research:

Nice coloring here.

Interestingly, Dauoi's fate hasn't been explicitly revealed yet, but more of his machinations have:

If you'd read the solicits for #3 and up, a light would've gone off in your head right about now.

If you haven't, well.. remember a certain scene from Incredible Hercules?

Well, this week's #2 pays that off and gives us zombie!Hyperion at play.

See, #1 gave us an 'oh shit' moment after zombie!Nuke clambering into PEGASUS's atomic waste pile:

(Aww, zombie clones that care! Hope #3-5 play that up a little bit..)

Hyperion following a magma flow just so he can burst out of the Earth and secure for them a food supply in.. Kansas.

Which's where #2 picks up, getting all the inevitable jokes out of the way.. for DC Zombies, this ain't.

Yes, while our heroes fight against the zombie hordes, Hyperion tears through a kindly Kansas couple, a football team with a familiar looking quarterback (the glasses were a bit much), aaaaand..

Factory-farmed cows.

(Roxxon is really owning the corporate evil thing, but I suppose you'd have to when most of your budgets include dimensional bridging.)

This is what incurs the wrath of the local superteam:

Who, very obviously, are not going to make it out of this unscathed: Topeka is ripped gruesomely in half, and the others do no better.

(Oh, heat-vision!)

Pioneer's the only survivor, thanks to an attack of mad cow on Hyperion's part. Yeah.

Back at PEGASUS, Battlestar does a "Stay alive, I'll see you later!" (I keep thinking he's going to be a zombie before this's out) and our heroes get desperate.

And just like that, a resurrection happens in one mighty cosmic page:

(You would not forget someone dressed like that.)

So now we've got, over the next three issues, an ill zombie superman (and his semi-rational friends) and a disoriented gaudy fellow come alive in the midst of said ravenous undead.

Fun! Hopefully the next three'll be a little more interesting.

It was funny. I was just wondering to myself whatever happened to Battlestar, and then the first issue of this came out. I'd be worried that they're going to kill him off, but he's the only black guy in the group and it's a zombie book, so he gets a Romero Bonus (tm).

You know the only reason Sunflower exists is for the Plants vs. Zombies meta-joke.

One, two, three, four!

There's a zombie on your lawn,
There's a zombie on your lawn
There's a zombie on your lawn
We don't want zombies on our lawn.

Laugh it up, chucklenuts. You're the one who gets the fifty posts in a row berating you for infecting them with that particular earworm.

Is "danglemeat" in the same league, insult-wise? I'm just shootin' in the dark, here.

Yeah, that is what she said, what's it to ya, danglemeat?

Too bad those guys are literally just cannon fodder, because they look pretty damn awesome. Especially Sunflower, he's like Bob The Angry Flower on steroids.

Sunflower looks to me like the kind of hero who can rebuild himself, even after being set on fire. All heroes/villain made of plants seem to have that power. And Grain Belt I think could come back in a Dust-esqe manner, just reform eventually. I think Topeka and Harvey Birdman are dead for good though.

So is this finally the explanation of where the zombie virus comes from? The messed up clones?

I doubt it. This is just a separate case I think. The zombie virus itself originated in a time loop. Earth Z's Sentry gave it to the Zombiverse whose Sentry gave it to Earth Z courtesy of the watcher. I wouldnt say this isnt how it started, and it could be interesting, but they seem pretty happy with the established origin.

Nah, this seems completely separate from that Virus that's been plaguing the other MZ titles.

Though I do have to say, the scientist here is possibly one of the dumbest ever. "Hrm, mystery particles in my negatively-charged Zeta energy? Eh, sure, toss it in, what's the worse that could happen?"

Though I'm wondering if that "mystery energy" (Jack of Hearts) is what made them zombie-fied. Because if not, if that was just harmlessly tagging along, then it was the negatively-charged Zeta energy -- and only that energy -- which animated those dead clones into ravenous zombies. Which would means there's a completely natural cosmic phenomenon that makes the dead rise up and kill....
