"Superman" casting news

Kevin Costner has closed a deal to join the cast of Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' new Superman movie being directed by Zack Snyder.

Costner will join a group of actors that so far includes Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel and Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Superman's adopted Earth mother.

The actor will portray Jonathan Kent, the hero's adoptive father.

In comics lore, the Kents are portrayed as the two people who most influence Superman, helping give direction to his moral compass and teaching his honorable values. In varying runs of the many comic books, Jonathan Kent is portrayed as having passed away after Clark Kent graduated from high school to being alive and well when the older Clark has his adventures as Superman.

The part of Pa Kent was famously played by Glenn Ford in the Richard Donner Superman movie; the character suffered a heart attack, lending the movie some of its poignancy.

Whether Costner will have an on-screen death is being kept very tightly under the cape by Warner Bros. and producers Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder.

Costner, repped by WME and One Talent Management, last starred in The Company Men with Ben Affleck and Tommy Lee Jones.

UPDATE: Warners has confirmed our story, issuing a press release with the following statement from Snyder: "Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest superhero of all time."

I remember when Superman Returns was being developed, there was a persistent rumor that Singer was going to have Hugh Jackman play Pa Kent in flashbacks.

That would have been pretty weird.

Aw, I wish my mom was still awake so I could tell her this. She can't stand Costner. Can't wait to see the look on her face. :p

I'm slightly annoyed by the wording of that statement from Snyder, though. It doesn't matter that they aren't related by blood, Jonathan Kent is not Clark's "father figure" he is his FATHER, plain and simple.

I basically am as well. I really can't think of a movie he's been in that I've really liked. It's not that I hate him, I just find his movies reeeeally boring. Like the "so boring I can't even watch the whole movie" boring. I love messing with my mom about him (and many other actors), though. You mention any movie of his like Field of Dreams or Dances With Wolves to her and her eyes just kind of glaze over. heh.

As Costner has never remotely impressed me as an actor, I can't say this news thrills me.

Nice scans though, Annalee being the only fatality in the entire Great Mutant Massacre who had actually made more than a "Hi I'm.. URK! ARGH!" appearance, and being Leech's mother figure made for about the only really heart-rending death in the series.

So Jonathan Kent will be a wooden, boring man who never shows emotion. Okay. At least he won't be in the film for too long. I'd be a lot more bothered if Costner was playing Lex Luthor.

I think it's nice that Scott's first reaction is to take the visor off so he can look Leech in the eyes while he reassures him.

I hope they have a scene of him teaching Clark to play baseball, as the presence of that sport seems to be the key to making his character connect emotionally with the audience.
