Okay, the last page made me giggle. That was sweet.

Having not read the Savage Dragon since the 1990s, seeing these pages is just bizarre to me. It's like meeting a relative when he's just hit puberty and then not seeing him again until his mid-life crisis. There's obviously a lot I've missed.

Same. I remember Savage Dragon being fucking horrible, and this doesn't seem bad at all. I didn't even know it was still being put out.

Erik Larsen is still doing Savage Dragon. Huh.

He, Fred Perry, and Stan Sakai have been quietly trucking along with their respective series for the last two decades, mostly without anyone noticing.

Yea. There's a lot to be said for that, I think.

I think so too. I know Larsen has some Dave Sim-like tendencies that cause some people to totally dismiss him (which is fair) but he really has shown a strong commitment to telling his stories, his way, which was the whole reason behind the Image revolt.

Not sure there was any way to predict he'd be the only one out of all the Image founders still plugging away at his characters nearly 20 years later.

How crazy has he gotten?

Oh, not crazy exactly--I meant more Sim in his "odd opinions about the opposite sex" mode. There was some stupid Twitterfight he had with Gail Simone (I think) that I'm struggling to recall the details on...something about not understanding why something was sexist. Or something.

Oh, I think I remember that (iirc, about 'mansplaining'? I'm not entirely sure).

Not *nearly* near Sims bad, more just insensitive.

Wasn't there a Savage Dragon cartoon series?

Yeah, on USA a loooooooong time ago. It was really different from the comics, but still pretty enjoyable (at least, that's how I remember it. I haven't seen the show in years). Kinda like how they had to change a lot to make Toxic Crusaders, but it still worked.

SAVAGE DRAGON is worth catching up on. There is a LOT of homage that goes on, so if you don't have a tolerance for that, it might not be for you, and his art is very stylized, but it works for me, and it is a wonderful little universe Mr. Larsen has created. It's a nice running commentary on comic book tropes. The overall quality of the book had very good, and what's more, consistently so. It's also unafraid to shake up its own status quo....this is a good jumping on point of you want to try it.

Wow, I remember the first few issues, and I was hoping he was really jus a regular guy named 'Rodney' who was experimented on...but he was an alien?...and he managed to have kids?!?!?...and he's dead?...wowwww

Also, WOW @ Stan Sakai's involvement...the art kinda reminds me of usagi yojimbo

Stan was involved? I thought bewareofgeek was just comparing Larsen to Sakai.

I heard good things about SD, but never read it. Wish I did because it does look interesting and that Batman and Robin scene is cute.

Why am I also thinking about the Cincinnati Bengals football team situation when they had Terell Owens and Chad Johnson (aka OchoCinco) and they were going back and forth on who was batman?!?...LOL,

PS, a lot good it did them both, eh?
