So with these two issues we have the prelude to and the first part of the "Death of Spider-Man" arc.

Needless to say, I'm a bit frustrated with some elements in how Bendis essentially reverts a lot of things back to the status quo with these issues. My best guess is that since Bagley's returning to a much-hyped new storyline he wants to set it up to a place where people who dropped the title would recognize it as opposed to wondering what's happening.

The first issue has art from Chris Samnee.

In #155, Peter is fired from his old job at a fast food place at the mall but is called up by Jonah who now knows who Spidey is from before. The two have an interesting conversation but it takes up half of the issue and I couldn't find the right limits. Basically, he tells Peter that he was wrong all this time and wants to make it up to him, even offering to pay for Peter's college tuition. Peter just wants his old job, and Jonah says it's the least he could do, even offering to spruce up the pay and make it easier for him to get out there in the world. Of course, Jonah is still Jonah and wants exclusive stories from Peter about his Spider-Man adventures.

Later on, Peter runs into Kitty Pryde as the Shroud. Earlier on Kitty Pryde had fled with her boyfriend Kong after she was almost arrested for being a mutant.

My face when I read that:

In all seriousness, I am extremely disappointed with Bendis in writing out Kong from the storyline like that and essentially ending the Kitty Pryde/Shroud storyline in such a halfassed manner. He had something really interesting going on with Kong and Kitty on the run, and to see him deal with it in such a way frustrates me to no end. Kong was also one of Bendis's best characters and writing him out like this does a huge disservice to the character. Fail.

As much as I love Pete/MJ and that their getting back was inevitable (no matter what Joe Quesada will say otherwise), again, this just seems a bit contrived. Pete and MJ are back, Pete's back at the Bugle, and Kitty has returned and no longer spouting pro-Magneto rhetoric.

Sooo...next issue it's revealed that Norman Osborn is alive and in SHIELD custody. Apparently he survived getting shot in the head at close range in his normal form. He does what Goblins do best and blasts his way free. In the process though he seems to have found God, probably after such a close brush from death.

Again...frustrating. I like Bendis's Goblin,  but I thought he had meant it when he said the Death of the Goblin arc was going to be the final story with him, and I thought Bendis had given the final word on his take on the character. It was a fairly tragic ending with the Goblin killing his son, and so devastated, he turned back to his human self and asked to be shot.

But he's back, so that's that.

Dun dun dun...

Well, anything interesting about the relaunch of Ultimate Spider-Man has just gone out the window, frankly.

Bad, interesting Kitty? Gone.
Relationship with cool and awesome Gwen Stacy? Gone.
Dead Norman Osborn? Reversed.
Cool and Exciting new artists? Gone.
Business as usual with the Sinister Six? Check.
So-Called 'Event' storyline taking forever to get going? Check.

So everything old is new again. And boy, does it suck. This feels so much like cleaning house it's painful.

Autn May is still running a home for wayward supers (it would be really interesting if she ran an Xavier like school and it, you know actually works:)

i like that Peter and MJ ar together again (It makes me sad though because i want OUR peter and mj back...:( )

Jonah liking Peter is a good development, I admit, but it feels like small potatoes in amongst this. It's a nice ending to the stuff that Bendis set up way back in some of the earlier USM stories, with Jonah realising Spidey isn't so bad. It's also way better than the current 616 Spidey/Jonah crap.

And Aunt May would likely succeed and make a better head teacher than that jerk Xavier.

The title is ending, the character is not going to continue. There's no point leaving plotlines unresolved. :)

But in all probability. With the cartoon coming and Bendis taking on even more 616 titles, it doesn't seem likely to continue.

Bendis wouldn't cancel a title for a reason like that, especially one like USM.

Bendis has written this much material before. He's already finished writing the Takio OGN for Oeming, given that was published this month, but he's only adding Moon Knight to his set of titles for writing. Scarlet, with Maleev, is also likely done. I can't imagine the six-to-eight-issue Brilliant will take him too long.

Even with the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, this is only as much work as he's had in the past, at the point where he was also writing Daredevil. Besides, Ultimate Spider-Man is his baby, and one where he can do pretty much whatever he wants. He hasn't suggested giving it up, or he would've said something by now.

To be honest, I'm a little angry about the smiley, if only because that imply's that your happy with the possibility. USM is currently the Spider-Man comic that I'm taking into cannon (with the stupid Slott still filling in the main position (see what I did there?)) and I'd be sorely disappointed if the only real Spidey-feeling comic I have left leaves me. And no, I can't afford to get the Avenger books at the time.

Business as usual with the Sinister Six? Check.

Ah, have to stop you there - the Ultimate Six only appeared once in their own crossover, and never in Ult. Spidey proper. So this kinda is a new thing - sorta.

Also, this Six is nothing like the one featured in the promotional art for this event, so either that art was a fake, or Osborn and the rest escaping is just a red herring and have nothing to do with the real story line (or at least aren't the line up that Peter will actually be facing).

Point taken. I am kind of interested as to where this is all going, and the use of the Six is interesting, given, as you say, they've only appeared once, but Bendis has annoyed me by washing away all the interesting changes he made in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. Perhaps I should've expected this when they switched back to the old numbering and title, though. What was the point?

My mind simply boggles at replacing Chris Samnee with Mark Bagley.. That's like washing down an exquisite lobster dinner with a can of beer from the truck stop.

Bagley's a perfectly servicable craftsman, but that's about it. I think his style lacks the personality, range of expression and charme Samnee has.
You can tell exactly what anyone is thinking or feeling in the Samnee pages, just by looking at their faces, even when there's no text. Bagley's characters on the other hand all just grin evily or stare maniacally and everyone kind of has the same face. It all lacks subtlety and is all a little bit ugly, IMHO.
Technically acceptable, but without any soul.

This. No harm to Bagley, but Chris Samnee is the next great Marvel artist. That silent panel of MJ, when Peter see's her at the party, is fantastic.

I could not disagree more. Especially about the faces; I've always found Bagley's expressions to convey what the person's thinking, especially in dramatic or funny moments.

There's nothing wrong with him per-say. His art is consistantly pretty good. But I see where s/he is coming from, because after whoever they've had on the art duties recently, Bagely's stuff is going to feel like a downgrade. The art in the above scans is just so pretty...

Brubaker on Secret Avengers, Kathryn Immonen's Hellcat mini, Incredible Hercules, Greg Pak on Incredible Hulk(s), Fred Van Lente, most of Jeff Parker's work, Uncanny X-Force, Jason Aaron on Ghost Rider and Wolverine, Brubaker's Captain America is still great, there's no way Greg Rucka's Punisher book isn't going to be excellent, Kieron Gillen's SWORD mini...

Short answer: yes, but people like to complain.

Long answer: would you like a list? The Marvel line is more consistently excellent now than it's ever been, although it's got more than its share of serious problems and awful missteps to boot.

I was going to say, at this point ten years back, weren't Marvel still struggling to come out of the rut they were stuck in thanks to their 90's bankruptcy? It would be easier to pick out the characters who haven't had a good time under Quesada's tenure. As much as I disapprove of Bendis' monopoly on the Avengers for six years, now, and OMD/BND, the past ten years have been very, very fruitful for a lot of characters.

Agreed! WTF?

Also, I thought Otto was one of the kinda-sorta-good-guys now (or at least, a Scorpius-like villain working with the heroes) after the whole Ultimate Doom thing? Or did he go right back to being in prison, status quo reaffirmed and whatnot?

The problem, really, is that it has leaked into all of the characters. Where before, someone like Norman Osborn would actually display a fairly different voice, the exchange between him and Electro could easily be one between Peter and MJ hiding out someplace.

To be fair, Kong's gone, not dead. If Bendis just got him offstage because there are so many other characters now, that's perfectly reversible.
