cyberghostface: (Spidey & MJ)

So with these two issues we have the prelude to and the first part of the "Death of Spider-Man" arc.

Needless to say, I'm a bit frustrated with some elements in how Bendis essentially reverts a lot of things back to the status quo with these issues. My best guess is that since Bagley's returning to a much-hyped new storyline he wants to set it up to a place where people who dropped the title would recognize it as opposed to wondering what's happening.

The first issue has art from Chris Samnee.

In #155, Peter is fired from his old job at a fast food place at the mall but is called up by Jonah who now knows who Spidey is from before. The two have an interesting conversation but it takes up half of the issue and I couldn't find the right limits. Basically, he tells Peter that he was wrong all this time and wants to make it up to him, even offering to pay for Peter's college tuition. Peter just wants his old job, and Jonah says it's the least he could do, even offering to spruce up the pay and make it easier for him to get out there in the world. Of course, Jonah is still Jonah and wants exclusive stories from Peter about his Spider-Man adventures.

Later on, Peter runs into Kitty Pryde as the Shroud. Earlier on Kitty Pryde had fled with her boyfriend Kong after she was almost arrested for being a mutant.

My face when I read that:

In all seriousness, I am extremely disappointed with Bendis in writing out Kong from the storyline like that and essentially ending the Kitty Pryde/Shroud storyline in such a halfassed manner. He had something really interesting going on with Kong and Kitty on the run, and to see him deal with it in such a way frustrates me to no end. Kong was also one of Bendis's best characters and writing him out like this does a huge disservice to the character. Fail.

As much as I love Pete/MJ and that their getting back was inevitable (no matter what Joe Quesada will say otherwise), again, this just seems a bit contrived. Pete and MJ are back, Pete's back at the Bugle, and Kitty has returned and no longer spouting pro-Magneto rhetoric. issue it's revealed that Norman Osborn is alive and in SHIELD custody. Apparently he survived getting shot in the head at close range in his normal form. He does what Goblins do best and blasts his way free. In the process though he seems to have found God, probably after such a close brush from death.

Again...frustrating. I like Bendis's Goblin,  but I thought he had meant it when he said the Death of the Goblin arc was going to be the final story with him, and I thought Bendis had given the final word on his take on the character. It was a fairly tragic ending with the Goblin killing his son, and so devastated, he turned back to his human self and asked to be shot.

But he's back, so that's that.

Dun dun dun...

The title is ending, the character is not going to continue. There's no point leaving plotlines unresolved. :)

But in all probability. With the cartoon coming and Bendis taking on even more 616 titles, it doesn't seem likely to continue.

Bendis has written this much material before. He's already finished writing the Takio OGN for Oeming, given that was published this month, but he's only adding Moon Knight to his set of titles for writing. Scarlet, with Maleev, is also likely done. I can't imagine the six-to-eight-issue Brilliant will take him too long.

Even with the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, this is only as much work as he's had in the past, at the point where he was also writing Daredevil. Besides, Ultimate Spider-Man is his baby, and one where he can do pretty much whatever he wants. He hasn't suggested giving it up, or he would've said something by now.

To be honest, I'm a little angry about the smiley, if only because that imply's that your happy with the possibility. USM is currently the Spider-Man comic that I'm taking into cannon (with the stupid Slott still filling in the main position (see what I did there?)) and I'd be sorely disappointed if the only real Spidey-feeling comic I have left leaves me. And no, I can't afford to get the Avenger books at the time.
